1967 Vancouver Royal Canadians Season
The 1967 Vancouver Royal Canadians season was the first season in the history of the Vancouver Royals, Vancouver Royal Canadians Association football, soccer club. The club played in the United Soccer Association (USA), a league that used clubs from Europe and South America to represent American and Canadian cities. Vancouver Royals
The Vancouver Royals were a Canadian professional soccer team based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Founded in 1967 as the Vancouver Royal Canadians, they were a charter member of the United Soccer Association (USA), and when the USA and rival National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) merged in 1968 to form the North American Soccer League (NASL), the team, rebranded as the Royals, moved to the new league. The Royals played its home matches at the Empire Stadium. The team folded at the conclusion of the 1968 NASL season. Cecil Irwin (footballer)
Cecil Irwin (born 8 April 1942) was an English footballer who played as a right-back for Sunderland. Playing career Irwin made his debut for Sunderland on 20 September 1958 against Ipswich Town in a 2–0 defeat at Roker Park. He went on to make 313 league appearances, scoring just a single goal at his time with the club. Player-manager career After finishing his stint with Sunderland, he moved on to Yeovil Town as a player-manager, staying with them from 1972 to 1975, when his contract was not renewed. Colin Suggett
Colin Suggett (born 30 December 1948) is an English former professional football player and manager. He played as a midfielder in the Football League for Sunderland, West Bromwich Albion, Norwich City and Newcastle United. Born in Chester-le-Street, Suggett began his career as an apprentice at Sunderland, with whom he twice won the FA Youth Cup. He represented England Schools, and later the England Youth team. He moved to West Bromwich Albion in July 1969 for a club record fee of £100,000. He then joined Norwich for a £70,000 fee in February 1973. He was voted Norwich City player of the year in 1975. Derek Forster
Derek Forster (19 February 1949 – 2 May 2024) was an English footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He started his career at Manor Park School in Newcastle upon Tyne, and during his time at Manor Park he also played for the England school team. He then moved to Sunderland as a youth player, where he would progress to become their youngest ever player to make a first team appearance. Forster moved up into the senior side, but suffered limited appearances due to the presence of Jimmy Montgomery. He left Sunderland in 1972 to join Charlton Athletic before moving again to Brighton & Hove Albion where he finished his career. Jim Shoulder
James Shoulder (born 11 September 1946) is an English former football manager and player. Most notably, he was manager of the Australian national team from 1976 to 1978. As a player, Shoulder spent time at Sunderland, Scarborough and Hartlepool United. He combined his football career with higher education and graduated with a degree in Sociology from Durham University in 1973. He was manager of the Australian national team from 1976 to 1978, after succeeding Brian Green, who had been charged and convicted of stealing two LP records. After failing to secure Australia's qualification to the 1978 FIFA World Cup in Argentina, Shoulder was sacked, and replaced by Rudi Gutendorf. George Mulhall
George Mulhall (8 May 1936 – 27 April 2018) was a Scottish football player and manager. Born in Falkirk, Mulhall played as an outside left for Aberdeen and Sunderland. He was capped three times for Scotland. He became the manager of Bradford City, Bolton Wanderers and Halifax Town. Playing career Two of Mulhall's elder brothers had forged professional careers; Martin with Falkirk, Albion Rovers and Cowdenbeath, and Edward with East Stirlingshire. George Herd
George Herd (born 6 May 1936) is a Scottish former footballer, who played for Inverness Thistle, Queen's Park, Clyde, Sunderland, Vancouver Royal Canadians, Hartlepool United and Scotland. Player Herd began his professional football career in the Highland League with Inverness Thistle whilst undertaking his National Service at Fort George Barracks, just outside Inverness. Herd transferred from Inverness Thistle to Scottish Football League amateur club Queen's Park in 1956. He turned professional in May 1957 after moving to Clyde. In his first season at Clyde, he won the 1957–58 Scottish Cup and won his first Scotland cap, a 4–0 defeat to England in April 1958. He won a further four Scotland caps during his time at Clyde before departing for Sunderland in 1961 where he also took up a coaching role in 1969. Neil Martin (born 20 October 1940) is a Scottish former football player, who scored 100 league goals in both Scotland and England and won three full international caps for Scotland in the 1960s and 1970s. Known for his strength, power, bravery and commitment, Martin scored consistently while playing for several clubs. He played for Alloa Athletic, Queen of the South, Hibernian, Sunderland, Coventry City, Nottingham Forest, Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace. John O'Hare
John O'Hare (born 24 September 1946) is a Scottish former footballer. O'Hare's clubs included Sunderland, Derby County, Leeds United and also Nottingham Forest and was part of their European Cup victory in 1980, coming on as a substitute in the final. Allan Gauden (20 November 1944 – 29 April 2020) was an English professional footballer who played as a midfielder. Jim Baxter
James Curran Baxter (29 September 1939 – 14 April 2001) was a Scottish professional footballer who played as a left half. He is generally regarded as one of the country's greatest ever players. He was born, educated and started his career in Fife, but his peak playing years were in the early 1960s with the Glasgow club Rangers, whom he helped to win ten trophies between 1960 and 1965, and where he became known as "Slim Jim". However, he started drinking heavily during a four-month layoff caused by a leg fracture in December 1964, his fitness suffered, and he was transferred to Sunderland in summer 1965. In two and a half years at Sunderland he played 98 games and scored 12 goals, becoming known for drinking himself unconscious the night before a match and playing well the next day.
