The 1966 Allan Cup was the Canadian senior ice hockey championship for the 1965–66 senior "A" season. The event was hosted by the Drumheller Miners and Calgary, Alberta. The 1966 playoff marked the 58th time that the Allan Cup has been awarded. Allan Cup
The Allan Cup is the trophy awarded annually to the national senior amateur men's ice hockey champions of Canada. It was donated by Sir Montagu Allan of Ravenscrag, Montreal, and has been competed for since 1909. The current champions are the Lacombe Generals, who captured the 2019 Allan Cup in Lacombe, Alberta. History In 1908, a split occurred in the competition of ice hockey in Canada. The top amateur teams left the Eastern Canada Amateur Hockey Association, which allowed professionals, to form the new Inter-Provincial Amateur Hockey Union (IPAHU), a purely amateur league. The trustees of the Stanley Cup decided that the Cup would be awarded to the professional ice champion, meaning there was no corresponding trophy for the amateur championship of Canada. Senior Ice Hockey
Senior hockey refers to amateur or semi-professional ice hockey competition. There are no age restrictions for Senior players, who typically consist of those whose Junior eligibility has expired. Senior hockey leagues operate under the jurisdiction of Hockey Canada or USA Hockey. They are not affiliated in any way with professional hockey leagues. Many former professional players play Senior hockey after their pro careers are over. The top Senior AAA teams in Canada compete annually for the Allan Cup. Drumheller Miners
The Drumheller Miners were a senior ice hockey team based in Drumheller, Alberta, Canada. Two incarnations of the team existed. The first was a member of the Alberta Senior Hockey League (ASHL) in the late 1930s. The Miners playing in the ASHL featured the five Bentley brothers, Doug, Max, Reg, Roy and Wyatt. Doug, Max and Reg went on to play in the National Hockey League (NHL), while Doug and Max were both elected into the Hockey Hall of Fame. The second Miners team existed in the 1960s and 1970s. Drumheller won the 1966 Allan Cup played at the Stampede Corral in Calgary. They represented Canada at the 1967 Ahearne Cup tournament in Sweden, accompanied by Canadian Amateur Hockey Association president Art Potter. Drumheller finished in last place at the tournament, and lost by a 3–1 score to the Swedish team in a game that nearly resulted in an on-ice brawl. Sherbrooke Beavers
The Sherbrooke Castors or Beavers (in English) was the name of two different junior ice hockey teams in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and another team in the Quebec Eastern Provincial Hockey League. Both later franchises played at the Palais des Sports in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. Calgary Spurs
The Calgary Spurs were a Junior A ice hockey team in the Alberta Junior Hockey League. Founded in 1972 as The Pass Red Devils and following a two-year stop as the Pincher Creek Panthers, the franchise became the second AJHL franchise in Calgary (along with the Calgary Canucks) in 1978 as the Calgary Chinooks. The team became the Spurs one year later, retaining the name until the franchise went bankrupt in 1990. The assets of the defunct Spurs franchise were purchased by new investors and recreated as the Calgary Royals. As the Spurs, the team won two regular season titles in the AJHL, but never captured a playoff championship. Selkirk Fishermen
The Selkirk Fishermen are a junior "B" ice hockey team based in Selkirk, Manitoba. They are members of the Capital Region Junior Hockey League (CRJHL). The franchise was founded in 1917. They are the longest running junior hockey team in Canada. The Fishermen won the Abbott Cup in 1920, making them the Junior Champion for Western Canada and earning a playoff against the George Richardson Memorial Trophy winning Eastern Champion for the Memorial Cup.
