1965 Peruvian Primera División
The 1965 Peruvian Primera División, the top category of Peruvian football, was played by 10 teams. The national champion was Alianza Lima. This was the first season to qualify two teams to the Copa Libertadores and the last to only include teams from Lima and Callao. Format The season was divided into two stages. In the first stage, each team played the others twice (a double round robin system) for a total of 18 games. Teams received two points for a win and one point for a draw. No points were awarded for a loss. The teams carried their records from the first stage into the second stage. In the second stage, the teams were separated into two groups; an upper-table group and lower-table group. Each group played a further 4 games against the teams in their group. The upper group played for the league title and the lower group played to avoid relegation. The season champion and runner-up qualified for the 1966 Copa Libertadores. Peruvian Primera División
The Peru First Division (; ''First Division'') —known as Liga 1 Betsson for sponsorship reasons and officially as Liga 1 — is the top flight of association football in Peru. It has been referred to as Torneo Descentralizado since 1966, when the first teams residing outside the Lima and Callao provinces were invited to compete in the inaugural league national competition. The main sponsor is the Spanish telecommunications brand Movistar. There are 20 teams in the division of a league that operates on a system of promotion and relegation determined at the end of the season with the Segunda División and the Copa Perú. Seasons run from February to December with each team playing 44 matches. Defensor Arica
Defensor Arica was a Peruvian football club based in Breña, Lima. The club was founded in 1929 and reached the Peruvian Second Division in 1947. They were subsequently promoted to the first division in 1964. Their greatest achievement was second place in the national league in 1969 and consequently in 1970 they played in the Copa Libertadores. Two years later Defensor Arica were relegated.
