1965 NAIA Football Season
The 1965 NAIA football season was the tenth season of college football sponsored by the NAIA. The season was played from August to November 1965, culminating in the 1965 NAIA Championship Bowl, played this year again at ARC Stadium in Augusta, Georgia. Saint John's (MN) defeated in the Championship Bowl, 33–0, to win their second NAIA national title. 1965 Saint John's Johnnies Football Team
The 1965 Saint John's Johnnies football team was an American football team that represented Saint John's University as a member of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) during the 1965 NAIA football season. In their 13th season under head coach John Gagliardi, the Johnnies compiled an 11–0 record (7–0 against conference opponents) and won the MIAC championship. The team advanced to the NAIA playoff and won the NAIA national championship with a 33–0 victory over in the Champion Bowl. It was the second of four national championships for the Saint John's Johnnies football program under head coach John Gagliardi. On defense, the team opened the season with four consecutive shutouts and held seven of eleven opponents scoreless. NAIA Football National Championship
The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Football National Championship is decided by a post-season playoff system featuring the best NAIA college football teams in the United States. Under sponsorship of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, the championship game has been played annually since 1956. In 1970, NAIA football was divided into two divisions, Division I and Division II, with a championship game played in each division. In 1997, NAIA football was again consolidated into one division. The 2019 game was played at the Eddie G. Robinson Stadium in Grambling, Louisiana. 1965 NCAA University Division Football Season
During the 20th century, the NCAA had no playoff for the major college football teams in the University Division, later known as Division I-A. The NCAA did recognize a national champion based upon the final results of "wire service" (AP and UPI) polls. The "writers' poll" by Associated Press (AP) was the most popular, followed by the "coaches' poll" by United Press International) (UPI). Prior to 1965, both services issued their final polls at the close of the regular season, but before teams competed in bowl games. For the 1965 season, the AP took its final poll after the postseason games, an arrangement made permanent in 1968. The Associated Press presented the "AP Trophy" to the winner. The AP poll in 1965 consisted of the votes of 55 sportswriters, each of whom would give their opinion of the ten best teams.
