1965 European Judo Championships
The 1965 European Judo Championships were the 14th edition of the European Judo Championships, and were held in Madrid, Spain, from 23 to 24 May 1965. The Championships were held in two separate categories: amateur (seven events) and professional (six events). The amateur contests were subdivided into six individual competitions, and a separate team competition. As the Soviet and other Socialist judokas were competing on a strictly non-profit basis, they were allowed to compete both professionally, and as amateurs. As before, more than one representative of a single national team were allowed to qualify for participation in each event. Palacio de Deportes de la Comunidad de Madrid (English: ''Sports Palace of the Regional Community of Madrid''), officially WiZink Center since November 2016 for sponsorship reasons, is an indoor sporting arena located in Madrid, Spain. The former building, which was built in 1960, was destroyed by a fire in 2001. Architects Enrique Hermoso and Paloma Huidobro projected a ''High-Tech'' style new arena that was built at the same location between 2002 and 2005. Kazimierz Jaremczak
Kazimierz (; la, Casimiria; yi, קוזמיר, Kuzimyr) is a historical district of Kraków and Kraków Old Town, Poland. From its inception in the 14th century to the early 19th century, Kazimierz was an independent city, a royal city of the Crown of the Polish Kingdom, located south of the Old Town of Kraków, separated from it by a branch of the Vistula river. For many centuries, Kazimierz was a place where ethnic Polish and Jewish cultures coexisted and intermingled. The northeastern part of the district was historically Jewish. In 1941, the Jews of Kraków were forcibly relocated by the German occupying forces into the Krakow ghetto just across the river in Podgórze, and most did not survive the war. Sergey Suslin
Sergey Suslin (9 November 1944 – 1989) was a Soviet judoka and sambist. He competed in the men's lightweight event at the 1972 Summer Olympics. Criminal activity and conviction Since 1977, he worked as stuntman at the Lenfilm studio, playing minor roles in several Soviet action film. While there, together with other athletes who were employed as stuntmen at the Lenfilm, he took part in robberies and other criminal acts. In 1981, he was arrested and sentenced to 9 years in prison for the murder of his wife. He was released in 1989. He died the same year in Moscow after suffering a heart attack. According to , a USSR Master of Sports in sambo, the future President of Russia Vladimir Putin and his childhood friend Arkady Rotenberg were associates with the gang of Suslin and the “Jap” in the early 1970s. Anzor Kiknadze ( ka, ანზორ კიკნაძე, russian: Анзор Леванович Кикнадзе, 26 March 1934 – 17 November 1977) was a Georgian judoka who won a bronze medal in the heavyweight division (+80 kg) at the 1964 Summer Olympics. He is the first athlete to win two gold medals in Judo in one Olympics – in the heavyweight and absolute categories in 1972. Herbert Niemann (12 December 1935 – 19 February 1991) was an East German judoka. He competed in the men's heavyweight event at the 1964 Summer Olympics. He married Margarete Selling who had won gold with the women's eight at the 1966 European Rowing Championships.
