1964–65 National Football League (Ireland)
The 1964–65 National Football League was the 34th staging of the National Football League (NFL), an annual Gaelic football tournament for the Gaelic Athletic Association county teams of Ireland. Galway won the home competition with a win over Kerry in the final. The play-off with New York was now two-legged: the hosts won the first game with a last-minute point, but on Independence Day Galway won in a rout. John Donnellan
John F. Donnellan (born 27 March 1937) is an Irish former politician and sportsman. He served as a Fine Gael Teachta Dála (TD) for twenty-five years and as a Minister of State from 1982 to 1987. He played Gaelic football for his local club Dunmore McHales and at senior level for the Galway county team in the 1960s. Early and private life John Donnellan was born in Dunmore, County Galway in 1937. He was born into a family that had strong interests in both Gaelic games and Irish politics. His father, Michael Donnellan, had won an All-Ireland Senior Football Championship (SFC) medal with Galway in 1925, later becoming a TD for Clann na Talmhan. John Donnellan would go on to follow in his father's footsteps in both of these pursuits, although for a different party. John's son, Michael, would also go on to play football for Galway, winning All-Ireland SFC medals in 1998 and 2001. Mick O'Dwyer
Michael O'Dwyer (born 9 June 1936) is an Irish retired Gaelic football manager and former player. He most famously managed the senior Kerry county team between 1974 and 1989, during which time he became the county's longest-serving manager and most successful in terms of major titles won. O'Dwyer is regarded as the greatest manager in the history of the game. He is one of only three men to manage five different counties (he was preceded in reaching this total by Mickey Moran in 2008 and emulated by John Maughan in 2018). Martin Breheny has described him as "the ultimate symbol of the outside manager". Born in Waterville, County Kerry, O'Dwyer was introduced to Gaelic football by the local national school teacher who organized games between schools in the area. Kerry Senior Football Team
The Kerry county football team represents Kerry in men's Gaelic football and is governed by Kerry GAA, the county board of the Gaelic Athletic Association. The team competes in the three major annual inter-county competitions; the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Munster Senior Football Championship and the National Football League. Kerry's home ground is Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney. The team's manager is Jack O'Connor. Kerry was the fourth Munster county both to win an All-Ireland Senior Football Championship (SFC), as well as to appear in the final, following Limerick, Tipperary and Cork. John Hannigan
John Hannigan (1938/9 – 22 April 2014) was an Irish Gaelic footballer who played for St Eunan's and the Donegal county team. A versatile player, Hannigan began his career in midfield but played everywhere from corner back to corner-forward. He played as corner forward in the final of the 1956 Ulster Minor Football Championship, which Donegal won. He played 114 times for Donegal and made 27 Championship appearances between 1958 and 1973. Hannigan played for Donegal in the 1964–65 National Football League semi-final against Kerry, scoring 1–0. He won the 1972 Ulster Senior Football Championship with Donegal. Hannigan managed Donegal in 1975 and 1976. He also pursued an interest in golf. Hannigan died in Dublin aged 75 after suffering a heart attack in April 2014. Sean Ferriter
Sean Ferriter (born 15 September 1938) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer who played for St Eunan's and the Donegal county team. His position was in midfield (though he did play as a goalkeeper for his school). Early life and education Born in Milford, County Donegal, his parents were Garda Morgan (from West Kerry) and Tess (from Baltray in County Louth). He was one of six children: four sons and two daughters. He attended Dunfanaghy National School for his primary education. For his secondary education, Ferriter attended St Eunan's College as a boarder, playing for the school team (as a goalkeeper) and being greatly influenced by John Wilson, the Gaelic footballer and future Tánaiste who was teaching there at that time. Seamus Hoare
Seamus Hoare (died 16 May 2022) was an Irish Gaelic footballer who played as goalkeeper for St Eunan's and the Donegal county team. He represented Donegal for 14 years in the 1950s and 1960s. He also represented Ulster, winning four Railway Cups. Career Hoare attended St Eunan's College. He was the first of three footballers from the twentieth century to have played for the Donegal county football team while still attending the College; the others being Martin Carney and Paul McGettigan. He played for Donegal for 14 years, making 25 championship appearances in that time; his championship debut came against Down in 1955 and he played his last game for his county against Cavan in 1969.
