New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals MP after their names. From the creation of the assembly up to about 1990, the post-nominals "MLA" (Member of the Legislative Assembly) were used. Waratah was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales in the Newcastle area, including the suburb of Waratah. It was originally created in 1894, when multi-member districts were abolished, and the three member district of Newcastle was divided between Waratah, Newcastle East, Newcastle West, Kahibah and Wickham. The district was abolished in 1913 and recreated in 1930, replacing parts of Kahibah and Wallsend Wallsend is a town in North Tyneside, England, at the eastern end of Hadrian's Wall. Edward Greaves (Australian Politician)
Edward Greaves (25 August 1910 – 4 July 1964) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1962 until 1963. He was a member of the Labor Party. Greaves was born in Durham, England and, as an infant, migrated to Australia with his family. The Speaker of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the presiding officer of the Legislative Assembly, New South Wales's lower chamber of Parliament. The current Speaker is Jonathan O'Dea, who was elected on 7 May 2019. Traditionally a partisan office, filled by the governing party of the time, O'Dea replaced the previous Liberal Speaker Shelley Hancock, following the 2019 state election. Role The Speaker presides over the House's debates, determining which members may speak. The Speaker is also responsible for maintaining order during debate, and may punish members who break the rules of the House. Frank Purdue
Frank Outen Jensen Purdue, (2 September 1899 – 24 December 1985) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1956 until 1962 and again between 1964 and 1965. He was prominent in local Government and was Lord Mayor of Newcastle, NSW for 9 years between 1951 and 1965. He was not aligned to a political party. Early life Purdue was born in Murrumbeena, Victoria. He was the son of a building contractor and was educated to intermediate level at Armidale High School. His initial employment was with the New South Wales Railway Department as a clerk. He was transferred to Newcastle in 1922 and resigned from the department in 1955. Purdue was a Methodist lay preacher, Rotarian and Freemason. He walked with a profound limp due to childhood polio.
