1964 NBA Finals
The 1964 NBA World Championship Series was the championship round of the 1964 NBA playoffs, which concluded the National Basketball Association 1963–64 season. The best-of-seven series was played between the Western Conference champion San Francisco Warriors and the Eastern Conference champion Boston Celtics. This was the Celtics' eighth straight trip to the championship series, as they won the series over the Warriors, 4–1. This was the first time Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain faced off in the NBA Finals; they would do so once again in 1969. This was also the first meeting between the Celtics and Warriors in the NBA Finals; they would meet each other again in 2022 and the Warriors won the series in 6 games. 1963–64 San Francisco Warriors Season
The 1963–64 NBA season was the Warriors' 18th season in the NBA and second in San Francisco. The Warriors were led by superstar center Wilt Chamberlain and renowned playmaker Guy Rodgers, both of whom were named to their second-consecutive all-star games during the season. The Warriors were also aided by rookie draft pick Nate Thurmond as well as veterans Tom Meschery and Al Attles, and were coached by newcomer Alex Hannum. The Warriors won 48 games in the regular season, and beat the St. Louis Hawks in a tough seven game series during the conference finals to advance to the NBA Finals, in only their second season as a San Francisco team. 1964 NBA Playoffs
The 1964 NBA playoffs was the postseason tournament of the National Basketball Association's 1963–64 season. The tournament concluded with the Eastern Division champion Boston Celtics defeating the Western Division champion San Francisco Warriors 4 games to 1 in the NBA Finals. Boston earned their 6th straight and 7th overall NBA title, as they continued to dominate the decade; except for 1967, they won every NBA title in the 1960s. This was the San Francisco Warriors' first trip to the NBA Finals since 1956 when they were based in Philadelphia; they would make a repeat appearance in 1967 and (as the Golden State Warriors) would earn the franchise's third championship in 1975. Gary Phillips (basketball)
Gary A. Phillips (born December 7, 1939) is an American former professional basketball player. A 6'3" (1.90 m) guard, Phillips starred at the University of Houston during the late 1950s and early 1960s. He was the University of Houston's first All-America basketball player who earned Second-Team All-America honors in 1959–60 and First-Team honors in 1960–61. A two-time All-Missouri Valley Conference selection, Phillips ended his college career having scored 1,452 points. Boston Garden
The Boston Garden was an arena in Boston, Massachusetts. Designed by boxing promoter Tex Rickard, who also built the third iteration of New York's Madison Square Garden, it opened on November 17, 1928, as "Boston Madison Square Garden" (later shortened to just "Boston Garden") and outlived its original namesake by 30 years. It was above North Station, a train station which was originally a hub for the Boston and Maine Railroad and is now a hub for MBTA Commuter Rail and Amtrak trains. 2022 NBA Finals
The 2022 NBA Finals was the championship series of the National Basketball Association (NBA)'s 2021–22 season and conclusion of the season's playoffs. In this best-of-seven playoff series, the Western Conference champion Golden State Warriors defeated the Eastern Conference champion Boston Celtics in six games, winning their fourth championship in eight years. Golden State's Stephen Curry was named the Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the first time in his career. Eastern Conference (NBA)
The Eastern Conference is one of two conferences that make up the National Basketball Association (NBA), the other being the Western Conference. Both conferences consist of 15 teams organized into three divisions. The current divisional alignment was adopted at the start of the 2004–05 season, when the now Charlotte Hornets began play as the NBA's 30th franchise.
