1964 CONCACAF Pre-Olympic Tournament
The 1964 CONCACAF Pre-Olympic Tournament was the first edition of the CONCACAF Pre-Olympic Tournament, the quadrennial, international football tournament organised by CONCACAF to determine which national teams from the North, Central America and Caribbean region qualify for the Olympic football tournament. It was held in Mexico, from 16 and 20 March 1964. Host nation, Mexico, won the tournament and qualified for the 1964 Summer Olympics as the sole representative of CONCACAF. Carl Gentile
Carl Gentile is a former U.S. soccer forward. He played one season in the National Professional Soccer League and two in the North American Soccer League, all three with the St. Louis Stars. He also earned six caps with the U.S. national team in 1968. Youth Gentile grew up in St. Louis, Missouri where he graduated from Christian Brothers College High School in 1962. He is a member of the CBC Alumni Hall of Fame. Gentile went on to play for St. Louis University, gaining first team All-American recognition in 1965. That year St. Louis also won the NCAA championship. In 2009, Gentile was named to the St. Louis University Men's Soccer Half-Century Team. Professional In 1967, Gentile signed with the St. Louis Stars of the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL). The association football tournament at the 1956 Summer Olympics was won by the Soviet Union. Background Following five withdrawals, the tournament featured three Eastern bloc teams and four from Asia. The other sides included in the draw were the United States, the United Team of Germany (which was ''de facto'' West Germany), Great Britain and the hosts Australia, competing in their first Olympic football tournament. The tendency of Eastern bloc countries to provide state-funding for their athletes put Western amateurs at a significant disadvantage. CONCACAF Men's Olympic Qualifying Tournament
The CONCACAF Men's Olympic Qualifying Championship was a quadrennial, international, age-restricted football tournament organized by CONCACAF to determine which men's under-23 national teams from the North, Central America and Caribbean region qualify for the Olympic football tournament. The competition format had varied since its inception, from 1996 to the final edition in 2020 it had been hosted in a single country. On 16 September 2021, CONCACAF announced that the representatives at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games will qualify through the 2022 CONCACAF U-20 Championship. The two finalist at the Concacaf u20 tournament will qualify for the Olympics in 2024. Estadio Olímpico Universitario is a multi-purpose stadium located inside Ciudad Universitaria in Mexico City. It was built in 1952 and at that time was the largest stadium in Mexico. This stadium has a capacity of 72,000. The first major event held in the stadium was the 1955 Pan American Games. The Unión Centroamericana de Fútbol (Central American Football Union), more commonly known by the acronym UNCAF, represents the national football teams of Central America: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama.
