1964 All-Big Ten Conference Football Team
The 1964 All-Big Ten Conference football team consists of American football players chosen by various organizations for All-Big Ten Conference teams for the 1964 Big Ten Conference football season. The selectors for the 1964 season were the Associated Press (AP), based on a vote by media members, and the United Press International (UPI), based on a vote of the conference coaches. Players selected as first-team players by both the AP and UPI are designated in bold. Michigan won the Big Ten Conference championship for the first time since 1950, defeated Oregon State in the 1965 Rose Bowl, and had five players who were selected as first-team honorees by either the AP or UPI. The 1964 Big Ten Conference football season was the 69th season of college football played by the member schools of the Big Ten Conference and was a part of the 1964 NCAA University Division football season. The 1964 Michigan Wolverines football team, under head coach Bump Elliott, won the Big Ten football championship, compiled a 9–1 record, led the conference in both scoring offense (23.5 points per game) and scoring defense (8.3 points allowed per game), was ranked No. 4 in the final AP Poll, AP and Coaches Poll, UPI polls, and defeated 1964 Oregon State Beavers football team, Oregon State, 34–7, in the 1965 Rose Bowl. Linebacker (LB) is a playing position in gridiron football. Linebackers are members of the defensive team, and line up three to five yards behind the line of scrimmage and the defensive linemen. Carl Ward
Carl Davis Ward (born July 26, 1944) is a former American football player. He played college football as a halfback for the University of Michigan from 1964 to 1966 and professional football in the National Football League (NFL) for the Cleveland Browns and New Orleans Saints from 1967 to 1969. George Donnelly (American Football)
George Donnelly (September 4, 1942 – November 22, 2022) was an American football player who played defensive back for three seasons for the San Francisco 49ers. At the University of Illinois, he and Dick Butkus were co-captains for the 1963 season, and Donnelly tied the NCAA record of 8 interceptions in one season. Illinois played in the 50th Rose Bowl Game on January 1, 1964, against the Washington Huskies. Donnelly had two interceptions in this game, both setting up Illini touchdowns. The first came in the third quarter, allowing Illinois to score their first touchdown of the game. Then in the fourth quarter, with Illinois up by a score of 10-7, Washington was driving downfield, trying to score a go-ahead and possible game-winning touchdown, but Donnelly intercepted the ball on the 4-yard line and ran it back to the 15. Karl Noonan
Karl Paul Noonan (born February 17, 1944) is a former collegiate and professional football wide receiver. As a high school football player at Assumption High School in Davenport (where one of his classmates was future Princeton All-American linebacker Stas Maliszewski). He played collegiately at the University of Iowa and professionally with the American Football League's Miami Dolphins from 1966 through 1969, and for the NFL's Dolphins from 1970 through 1972. Noonan had his one peak season with 1968, his third year. After combining for just 365 yards in eight combined starts the past two seasons, he caught 58 passes for 760 yards while having a league-leading eleven touchdowns. James Grabowski (born September 9, 1944) is a former American football player and broadcaster. He played college football at the University of Illinois and professionally in the National Football League (NFL) for the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears. He was an analyst on Illinois football radio broadcasts for nearly 30 years, retiring after the 2006 season.
