1963–1964 Massachusetts Legislature
The 163rd Massachusetts General Court, consisting of the Massachusetts Senate and the Massachusetts House of Representatives, met in 1963 and 1964 during the Governor of Massachusetts, governorship of Endicott Peabody. John E. Powers served as President of the Massachusetts Senate, president of the Senate and John F. Thompson (politician), John F. Thompson served as List of Speakers of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, speaker of the House. On May 9, 1964, a special Grand juries in the United States, grand jury indicted House speaker Thompson on 29 counts of bribery. On June 16, 1964, the General Court passed the bill establishing the University of Massachusetts Boston co-sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Maurice A. Donahue, Senator George V. Kenneally Jr., and House Majority Whip Robert H. Quinn along with a $200,000 appropriation. Massachusetts General Court
The Massachusetts General Court (formally styled the General Court of Massachusetts) is the state legislature of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The name "General Court" is a hold-over from the earliest days of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, when the colonial assembly, in addition to making laws, sat as a judicial court of appeals. Before the adoption of the state constitution in 1780, it was called the ''Great and General Court'', but the official title was shortened by John Adams, author of the state constitution. It is a bicameral body. The upper house is the Massachusetts Senate which is composed of 40 members. The lower body, the Massachusetts House of Representatives, has 160 members. (Until 1978, it had 240 members.) It meets in the Massachusetts State House on Beacon Hill in Boston. Sidney Curtiss
Sidney Quinn Curtiss (September 4, 1917 – January 24, 1994) was an American politician who was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1949 to 1979. Early life Curtiss was born on September 4, 1917 in Sheffield, Massachusetts. He attended St. Paul's School and graduated from Harvard College in 1940. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He graduated from Boston University Law School in 1947. Political career Curtiss was a longtime officeholder in Sheffield. From 1948 to 1977 he was town counsel. From 1951 to 1977 he was town moderator. He also served on the town's board of assessors. Curtiss represented the 6th Berkshire district in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1949 to 1979. From 1961 to 1971 he was House minority leader.
