1963 NAIA World Series
The 1963 NAIA World Series was the seventh annual tournament hosted by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics to determine the national champion of baseball among its member colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. The tournament was played at Phil Welch Stadium in St. Joseph, Missouri. Sam Houston State (27-8) defeated Grambling (28-4) in the championship series, 2–1, to win the Bearkats' first NAIA World Series. Sam Houston State shortstop Jimmy Dodd was named tournament MVP. Double Elimination
A double-elimination tournament is a type of elimination tournament competition in which a participant ceases to be eligible to win the tournament's championship upon having lost ''two'' games or matches. It stands in contrast to a single-elimination tournament, in which only ''one'' defeat results in elimination. One method of arranging a double-elimination tournament is to break the competitors into two sets of brackets, the ''winners' bracket'' and ''losers' bracket'' (''W'' and ''L'' brackets for short; also referred to as ''championship bracket'' and ''elimination bracket'', ''upper bracket'' and ''lower bracket'', or ''main bracket'' and ''repechage'') after the first round. The first-round winners proceed into the W bracket and the losers proceed into the L bracket. The Lewis Flyers are the athletic teams that represent Lewis University, located in Romeoville, Illinois, Romeoville (a suburb of Chicago, Illinois, Chicago), Illinois, United States, in intercollegiate sports as a member of the NCAA Division II, Division II level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), primarily competing in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) for most of its sports since the 1980–81 academic year; while its men's volleyball team compete in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA).
