1962 Peruvian General Election
General elections were held in Peru on 10 June 1962 to elect the President and both houses of Congress.Dieter Nohlen (2005) ''Elections in the Americas: A data handbook, Volume II'', p454 Víctor Raúl Haya de la Torre of the Peruvian Aprista Party won the presidential election with 33% of the vote. However, this was below the constitutional requirement of one-third of the vote. Víctor Raúl Haya De La Torre
Víctor Raúl Haya de la Torre (February 22, 1895 – August 2, 1979) was a Peruvian politician, philosopher, and author who founded the American Popular Revolutionary Alliance (APRA) political movement, the oldest currently existing political party in Peru by the name of the ''Peruvian Aprista Party'' (PAP). Born in Trujillo, a city on the north Peruvian coast, in the bosom of an aristocratic family, he enrolled in the National University of Trujillo and then the School of Law of the National University of San Marcos. He soon stood out as a student leader supporting the working class. He participated in protests against the regime of Augusto B. Leguía, standing out as a vigorous and eloquent speaker, with great power of persuasion due to the depth of his ideas. Odriist National Union
The Odriist National Union ( es, Unión Nacional Odriista or UNO), was a political party in Peru founded in 1961 by former President General Manuel A. Odría. The party had Julio de la Piedra amongst its leaders. Development The party had its origins in Odría's military regime, which ended in 1956 when he left the country. Odría's popularity grew after he left office, largely due to the high level of public works that his administration had brought in. His spending policies, however, had left a high level of public debt and it fell to the government of Manuel Prado Ugarteche to cope with this. The president is elected by the people for a five-year term. Progressive Social Movement (in Spanish language, Spanish: ''Movimiento Social Progresista'') was a political party in Peru founded in 1956. The Socialist Party (Spanish: ''Partido Socialista'') is a Peruvian political party founded in 2005. Its presidential candidate for the 2006 national election was Javier Diez Canseco.
