1962 Lower Hutt Mayoral Election
The 1962 Lower Hutt mayoral election was part of the New Zealand local elections held that same year. The elections were held for the role of Mayor of Lower Hutt plus other local government positions including fifteen city councillors, also elected triennially. The polling was conducted using the standard first-past-the-post electoral method. Background The incumbent Mayor, Percy Dowse, sought re-election for a fifth term. Dowse was opposed by the deputy mayor George Llewellyn Barker who stood as an independent candidate. Barker had been a councillor and member of the Wellington Harbour Board since 1959 and had recently contested the parliamentary seat of at the for the National Party. Just as in the previous two elections the Citizens' Association did not stand an official ticket of candidates and endorsed a slate of independents. Percy Dowse
Percy Dowse (4 December 1898 – 9 December 1970) was a New Zealand politician. He was mayor of Lower Hutt from 1950 to 1970. Biography Early life He was born in Lancashire in 1898 and was educated at Wigan Technical College. His coal miner father James was killed in a mining accident when he was eight and his mother with three children got compensation of only £140; Percy thought that "things didn’t seem to be quite adding up" with that money his mother bought a small grocery shop down the road. In West Alton Percy was secretary of the Trades and Labour Council and Organising Secretary of the Independent Labour Party. He became a mines inspector. He married Mary Kirkman in 1922, and the voyage to New Zealand was their honeymoon (they had considered migrating to India instead). They had a son and daughter together. In a first-past-the-post electoral system (FPTP or FPP), formally called single-member plurality voting (SMP) when used in single-member districts or informally choose-one voting in contrast to ranked voting, or score voting, voters cast their vote for a candidate of their choice, and the candidate who receives the most votes wins even if the top candidate gets less than 50%, which can happen when there are more than two popular candidates. The Lower Hutt Citizens' Association, was a right-leaning local body electoral ticket in Lower Hutt, New Zealand. It was formed in 1945 by merging the selection process of council candidates of several civic interest groups and business lobby groups. Its main ambitions were to continue to control the Lower Hutt City Council, reduce local spending and deny left-leaning Labour Party candidates election. History The Citizens' Association was formed on a permanent basis in 1945, growing out of the Ratepayers' Association which was founded in 1905. ''The Evening Post'' (8 February 1865 – 6 July 2002) was an afternoon metropolitan daily newspaper based in Wellington, New Zealand. It was founded in 1865 by Dublin-born printer, newspaper manager and leader-writer Henry Blundell, who brought his large family to New Zealand in 1863. Maungaraki
Maungaraki is a suburb of Lower Hutt. It is one of several Lower Hutt suburbs on the western hills of the Hutt Valley. It contains the largest suburban development on the Hutt Valley's western escarpment that runs along the Wellington Fault. Maungaraki translated from Māori means "northern mountain". This may reference the Māori pā to the south that once stood at Pito-one. Features of the suburb The suburb has a shopping centre, a baptist church, and a community hall that is managed by the Maungaraki Community Association. The Church building was relocated from the old NZ Railways works at Moera. There is one school in the suburb: Maungaraki School, a full primary school on Dowse Drive formed in 1999 by the merger of Puketiro and Otonga schools. Trevor James Young (28 August 1925 – 13 May 2012) was a New Zealand politician of the Labour Party. Biography Early life Young was born in 1925 in Turua on the Hauraki Plains. The son of Leslie Robert Young, he grew up in Cambridge and Blenheim, and attended Wellington College. He married Ailsa Hazel Anderson, the daughter of John James Anderson, in 1952. They had two sons. Young and his family settled in Naenae and he gained employment with the Public Trust. He had other jobs with the New Zealand Forest Service and Ministry of Defence before becoming the general superintendent of the New Zealand Alliance, an organisation opposed to the sale of alcoholic beverages. Harcourt Chenoweth "Chen" Werry (16 December 1908 – 5 October 1995) was a New Zealand businessman and politician. He was a Lower Hutt City Councillor for 36 years from 1950 to 1986 and was twice deputy mayor.
