The 1961 San Francisco 49ers season was the franchise's 12th season in the National Football League and their 16th overall. The 49ers won seven games and lost six, with one game ending in a tie. As a result, the team finished in fifth-place in the NFL Western Conference. The 49ers had three first-round picks in the NFL Draft. Eastern And Western Conferences (NFL) 1933–1969
The Eastern and Western Divisions of the National Football League, renamed the American and National Conferences in 1950 and then the Eastern and Western Conferences in 1953, were organized as a result of the 1932 NFL season#Championship race, disputed NFL championship of 1932. NFL owners agreed that henceforth there would be an annual NFL Championship, championship game, to be played between the teams with the best records from two divisions, Eastern and Western. The two-division/conference structure remained essentially stable for over 35 years, including the absorption of former All-America Football Conference teams in 1950, and the early expansion teams added in the 1960s in response to the American Football League. Wichita State Shockers Football
The Wichita State Shockers football team was the college football program of Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas. The Shockers fielded a team from 1897 to 1986. They played their home games at Cessna Stadium and were members of the Missouri Valley Conference until the program was discontinued. The team was known as Fairmount from its first season in 1897 to 1925 and Wichita from 1926 through 1963. Tackle is a playing position in gridiron football. Historically, in the one-platoon system prevalent in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a tackle played on both offense and defense. In the modern system of specialized units, offensive tackle and defensive tackle are separate positions, and the stand-alone term "tackle" refers to the offensive tackle position only. Bob McCreary
Bobby Joe McCreary (born June 20, 1939) is a former American football offensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL) for the Dallas Cowboys. He also was a member of the Calgary Stampeders in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played college football at Wake Forest University. Early years McCreary attended Hudson High School in Hudson, North Carolina. Although he never played football before his freshman season, he developed into an honorable-mention All-state football player as a senior. He also played basketball. McCreary accepted a football scholarship from Wake Forest University. After sustaining a career-threatening knee injury as a freshman in 1958 (torn medial collateral ligament), he recovered to become a two-way tackle. Defensive end (DE) is a defensive position in the sport of gridiron football. This position has designated the players at each end of the defensive line, but changes in formation (American football), formations over the years have substantially changed how the position is played. Franklin Clark Miller (August 11, 1938 – November 5, 2008) was a professional American football player in the National Football League (NFL) who played defensive end for nine seasons for the San Francisco 49ers, the Washington Redskins, and the Los Angeles Rams. Tight End
The tight end (TE) is a position in American football, arena football, and Canadian football, on the offense. The tight end is often a hybrid position with the characteristics and roles of both an offensive lineman and a wide receiver. Like offensive linemen, they are usually lined up on the offensive line and are large enough to be effective blockers. On the other hand, unlike offensive linemen, they are eligible receivers adept enough to warrant a defense's attention when running pass patterns.
