1961 Lamar Tech Cardinals Football Team
The 1961 Lamar Tech Cardinals football team represented Lamar State College of Technology—now known as Lamar University—as a member of the Lone Star Conference (LSC) during the 1961 NCAA College Division football season. Led by ninth-year head coach James B. Higgins, the Cardinals compiled an overall record of an 8–2–1 with a mark of 4–2–1 in conference play, placing third in the LSC. Lamar Tech was invited to the Tangerine Bowl, where the beat Middle Tennessee Middle Tennessee is one of the three Grand Divisions of the U.S. state of Tennessee that composes roughly the central portion of the state. Lone Star Conference
The Lone Star Conference (LSC) is a college athletic conference affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division II level. Member institutions are located in the southwestern United States, with schools in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Arkansas. Three schools in the Pacific Northwest—one each in Oregon, Washington, and the Canadian province of British Columbia—became football-only members in 2022. The Lone Star Conference operates from the same headquarters complex in the Dallas suburb of Richardson as the American Southwest Conference.
