1961 Kanonloppet
The 7th Kanonloppet was a motor race, run to Formula One rules, held on 20 August 1961 at the Karlskoga Circuit, Sweden. The race was run over 30 laps of the little circuit, and was won by British driver Stirling Moss in a Lotus 18/21, run by the UDT Laystall Racing Team. This race featured some local drivers who did not compete regularly in Formula One, and also the multiple world motorcycle champion Geoff Duke. Stirling Moss arrived late at the circuit and missed the practice and qualifying sessions, but was allowed to start from the back of the grid."The Formula One Record Book", John Thompson, 1974. Kanonloppet
Kanonloppet ("the cannon race") is an annual auto racing, motor race, run at the Karlskoga Motorstadion in Gelleråsen in the outskirts of Karlskoga, Sweden. The first races were run in 1950 and 1952, and then from 1954 onwards it was an annual event until the last one was held in 1984. That last year, the organizing club, Karlskoga Motorklubb, was made bankrupt. The 7th, 8th and 9th editions, held in 1961, 1962 and 1963 respectively, were run to the Formula One rules of the time, and the following years until 1967 it was run to Formula Two rules. The 1967 race was also named the Swedish Grand Prix. In 1996 Kanonloppet restarted as a race in the Swedish Touring Car Championship. Yeoman Credit Racing
Yeoman Credit Racing was a name used by two different Formula One motor racing teams in the early-1960s: the British Racing Partnership (1960); and Reg Parnell Racing (1961–62). The name was derived from commercial sponsorship arrangements, the first time that a Formula One racing team had changed their name in deference to sponsorship. Brief history The first team to benefit from this commercial relationship was the ''British Racing Partnership'', run by Ken Gregory and Alfred Moss, who were sponsored by ''Yeoman Credit Ltd.'' from August 1959. Yeoman Credit was a finance company founded by Joseph Samengo-Turner in the mid-1950s. By 1959/60 the company was being run by Joseph's sons Paul, William and Fabian. With an expanding business in financing retail motor sales, the Samengo-Turner brothers were looking at new ways of advertising Yeoman Credit. 1961 Guards Trophy
The Guards Trophy was an Intercontinental Formula motor race held on 7 August 1961 at Brands Hatch Circuit. The race was run over 76 laps of the circuit, and was won by Australian driver Jack Brabham in a Cooper T53-Climax. Brabham lapped the entire field. Jim Clark in a Lotus 18-Climax was second and Graham Hill in a BRM P48 was third. Bruce McLaren in another T53 set fastest lap and finished fourth. Stirling Moss qualified in pole position but retired with gearbox problems. This was the final Intercontinental Formula race. The formula had been overshadowed by the new 1.5 litre Formula One championship and was quietly abandoned. Yngve is a Scandinavian male given name, mostly used in Sweden and Norway. It is the modern form of either Old Norse Yngvi or of Ingwin. Throughout its history, the Italian auto manufacturer Maserati has participated in various forms of motorsports including Formula One, sportscar racing and touring car racing, both as a works team and through private entrants. Beginnings One of the first Maseratis the Tipo 26 driven by Alfieri Maserati with Guerino Bertocchi acting as riding mechanic won the Targa Florio 1,500 cc class in 1926, finishing in ninth place in overall. Maserati was very successful in pre-war Grand Prix racing using a variety of cars with 4, 6, 8 and 16 cylinders (two straight-eights mounted parallel to one another). Scuderia Serenissima
Scuderia Serenissima and Scuderia SSS Republica di Venezia were names used by Giovanni Volpi to enter his own cars in Formula One and sports car racing in the early 1960s. Scuderia Serenissima was an auto racing team in the early 1960s. Funded by Giovanni Volpi, Serenissima used Ferraris to much success until the founder financed the exiled Ferrari company, ATS. Thereafter, Enzo Ferrari would no longer sell his cars to Serenissima, so the company turned to De Tomaso, ATS, and Maserati. Volpi, and thus Serenissima, halted automobile operations in 1970. Maurice Trintignant
Maurice Bienvenu Jean Paul Trintignant (30 October 1917 – 13 February 2005) was a motor racing driver and vintner from France. He competed in the Formula One World Championship for fourteen years, between 1950 and 1964, one of the longest careers in the early years of Formula One. During this time he also competed in sports car racing, including winning the 1954 24 Hours of Le Mans race. Following his retirement from the track Trintignant concentrated on the wine trade. Wolfgang Seidel (4 July 1926 – 1 March 1987) was a racing driver from Germany. He participated in 12 Formula One World Championship Grands Prix, debuting on 2 August 1953. He scored no championship points. Seidel often entered cars under his own name, or under the Scuderia Colonia banner. After having been refused a start at the 1962 German Grand Prix due to slowness, Seidel got in an argument with officials from the Automobilclub von Deutschland. Combined with some doubts about the level of preparation of his cars, Seidel's competition licence was withdrawn, and he offered his two cars up for sale. Ulf Norinder
Ulf Norinder (19 May 1934 – 14 November 1978) was a racing driver from Sweden who competed in multiple classes including non-championship Formula One and the Le Mans 24 hour race in the 1960s and 1970s. Career Early years Norinder began his career with an entry in the 1956 Kanonloppet. Using a Ferrari 500 Mondial he failed to finish. He finished 7th in the 1958 Eläintarhan ajot, using a Maserati 200S, 18th in the :Cuban Grand Prix with a Porsche and 7th again in the Grand Prix of Naples with a Maserati. He did not finish in the Grand Prix des Frontières and although entered in the Nürburgring 1,000 km race, did not start. He shared a Porsche 356A with compatriot Jo Bonnier at the 12 Hours of Reims, finishing 12th. At the Governor's Trophy in Nassau he finished 2nd in his heat and 8th in the main race. Lieutenant Robert McGregor Innes Ireland (12 June 1930 – 22 October 1993), was a British military officer, engineer, and motor racing driver, with 1 Championship and 8 non-Championship Formula 1 race victories, and several sports car wins including one Tourist Trophy.
