German Television
Television in Germany began in Berlin on 22 March 1935, broadcasting for 90 minutes three times a week. It was home to the first public television station in the world, named ''Fernsehsender Paul Nipkow''. In 2000, the German television market had approximately 36.5 million television households, making it the largest television market in Europe. Nowadays, 95% of German households have at least one television receiver. All the main German TV channels are free-to-air. History In 1948 the British occupation forces allowed NWDR to broadcast television programmes for the British zone. Other regional networks also started to launch television in their own areas. Wyn Hoop
Wyn Hoop (born 29 May 1936) is a German singer, birth name Winfried Lüssenhop, best known for his participation in the 1960 Eurovision Song Contest. Born in Hannover, in the early 1950s, Hoop formed a jazz band called the Capitellos, who toured and worked on radio before disbanding in 1958. Hoop started to make solo recordings, at first under the name Fred Lyssen, before settling on the professional name Wyn Hoop. In 1960, Hoop took part in the German Eurovision selection final, and his song "Bonne nuit ma chérie" was chosen to go forward to the fifth Eurovision Song Contest, held in London on 29 March. At the contest "Bonne nuit ma chérie" (which, despite its title, was sung in German) finished in joint fourth place of the 13 entries. Hoop recorded several successful German cover versions of English-language hits (such as " Are You Lonesome Tonight?") before joining forces in 1962 with Finnish singer Pirkko Mannola, with whom he recorded a number of popular tracks. The Eurovision Song Contest 1960 was the fifth edition of the annual Eurovision Song Contest, held on Tuesday 29 March 1960 at the Royal Festival Hall in London, United Kingdom, and hosted by British television presenter and actress Catherine Boyle. Bonne Nuit Ma Chérie
Germany was represented by Wyn Hoop, with the song "Bonne nuit ma chérie", at the 1960 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place on 29 March in London. "Bonne nuit ma chérie" was chosen at the German national final held on 6 February. The song was sung in German despite its French title. Germany's 1963 Eurovision representative Heidi Brühl finished runner-up in 1960; however her song "Wir wollen niemals auseinandergehn" topped the German singles chart for several weeks and was one of the year's biggest sellers. ''Der schwarze Kanal'' (german: The Black Channel) was a series of political propaganda programmes broadcast weekly between 1960 and 1989 by East German television Deutscher Fernsehfunk. Each edition was made up of recorded extracts from recent West German television programmes re-edited to include a communist commentary. The programme was hosted by Karl-Eduard von Schnitzler and began on 21 March 1960. The name "Black Channel" is a play on words: in the German language "black channel" is a euphemism by plumbers for a sewer (compare English soil pipe). The name and the concept of the programme were originally a reaction to a West German programme named ''Die rote Optik'' ''("The red viewpoint")'' authored by journalist Thilo Koch, which ran between 1958 and 1960 and analysed East German television clips.
