1960 United States Senate Special Election In Missouri
The 1960 United States Senate special election in Missouri took place on November 8, 1960 in Missouri. The incumbent Democratic Senator, Thomas C. Hennings Jr., had died on September 13, 1960. Edward V. Long, the incumbent Lieutenant Governor of Missouri, was appointed to the seat on September 23, 1960, and won the special election. He defeated Republican nominee Lon Hocker, winning 53.2% of the vote. Long outperformed Democratic presidential nominee John F. Kennedy, who won 50.3% in Missouri in the presidential election. Democratic convention Following the death of Hennings, the Missouri Democratic Party held a special convention to nominate a successor and candidate for the special election. The convention was deadlocked between Charles Harrison Brown, Representative for Missouri's 7th district, and James T. Blair Jr, the Governor of Missouri. Missouri's 7th congressional district consists of Southwest Missouri. The district includes Springfield, the home of Missouri State University, and the popular tourist destination city of Branson. Located along the borders of Kansas, Oklahoma, and Northwest Arkansas, the district occupies part of the Bible Belt with a strong socially conservative trend. George W. Bush defeated John Kerry here 67% to 32% in the 2004 election. Republican John McCain defeated Democrat Barack Obama 63.1% to 35.3% in the 2008 election. The 1960 United States Senate elections coincided with the election of John F. Kennedy as president on November 8, 1960. A special election was held on June 28, 1960, for a mid-term vacancy in North Dakota. The Republicans gained two seats at the expense of the Democrats. Charles Harrison Brown
Charles Harrison Brown (October 22, 1920 – June 10, 2003) was a two-term U.S. representative from Missouri's 7th congressional district from 1957–61, and is the most recent Democrat to serve from that district. Brown was born in Coweta, Oklahoma, attended public schools in Humansville and Republic, Missouri, and high school in Springfield. He attended Drury College in 1937, 1938 and 1940 and George Washington University in Washington, D.C. in 1939. From 1937–38, Brown was program director of KWTO-AM in Springfield, where he had been an announcer at age 16. He was radio publicity director for the Missouri Conservation Commission in 1940, and was an account executive for an advertising agency in St. Louis, Missouri from 1943 to 1945. Its chair is Michael Butler, vice chair is Genevieve Williams, treasurer is Cydney Mayfield, and secretary is Manny Abarca. Mayfield has been the treasurer since 2018.
