1960 Brazilian Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in Brazil on 3 October 1960.Dieter Nohlen (2005) ''Elections in the Americas: A data handbook, Volume II'', p173 Jânio Quadros of the National Labor Party, helming a coalition of the PTN, the National Democratic Union and the Christian Democratic Party, won a sweeping victory, taking 48.3% of the vote. Voter turnout was 81%.Nohlen, p232 Quadros' victory was the largest in Brazilian history at the time; the 15.6 percent margin of victory would remain a record until Fernando Henrique Cardoso won by 27 points in 1994. When Quadros took office on 31 January 1961, it marked the first time since Brazil had become a republic in 1889 that an incumbent government peacefully transferred power to an elected member of the opposition. It also marked the first time in 31 years that the presidency had not been won by an heir to the legacy of Getúlio Vargas. Direct presidential elections are held in Brazil as part of the general elections every four years (which has been regular since 1994), typically in October. Liberator Party (Brazil)
The Liberator Party ( pt, Partido Libertador, PL) was a political party in Brazil which existed for two periods between 1928 and 1937 and then between 1945 and 1965. The PL's first incarnation was founded by members of the Rio Grande do Sul Federalist Party, notably Joaquim Francisco de Assis Brasil. Despite being the traditional opponents of the Riograndense Republican Party, it participated in the Gaucho United Front (''Frente Única Gaúcha'') which supported the candidacy of favourite son Getúlio Vargas in the 1930 election. It supported the so-called Liberal Revolution of 1930 which led to the overthrow of the República Velha and the accession of Vargas to the presidency. The PR was founded by former president of Brazil Artur Bernardes in 1945 and operated almost solely in Minas Gerais. João Goulart
João Belchior Marques Goulart (1 March 1919 – 6 December 1976), commonly known as Jango, was a Brazilian politician who served as the 24th president of Brazil until a military coup d'état deposed him on 1 April 1964.
