Brownwood, Texas
Brownwood is a city in and the county seat of Brown County, Texas, United States. The population was 18,862 at th2020 census Brownwood is located in the Northern Texas Hill Country and is home to Howard Payne University that was founded in 1889. History The original site of the Brown County seat of Brownwood was east of Pecan Bayou. A dispute arose over land and water rights, and the settlers were forced to find a new location. Greenleaf Fisk donated to relocate the county seat to the west side of the bayou, on what is now the current site of Brownwood, and 100 additional acres for county use. The town was incorporated in 1884. During the Second World War, Brownwood was the location of U.S. Army Camp Bowie, which had a peak complement of over 80,000 soldiers. 1958 NCAA University Division Football Season
The 1958 NCAA University Division football season was notable in that it was the first to feature the two-point conversion. On January 13, 1958, the eleven-man NCAA Rules Committee unanimously approved a resolution to allow teams to choose between kicking an extra point after a touchdown, or running or passing from the three-yard line for two points. University of Michigan athletic director Fritz Crisler said at the meeting in Fort Lauderdale, "It's a progressive step which will make football more interesting for the spectators," adding that the rule "will add drama to what has been the dullest, most stupid play in the game." Louisiana State University (LSU), with a record of 10–0, was crowned the national champion at the end of the regular season by both major polls, and won the Sugar Bowl on New Year's Day. The 1958 Buffalo Bulls football team represented the University at Buffalo in the 1958 NCAA College Division football season. The Bulls offense scored 236 points while the defense allowed 101 points. The team won the Lambert Cup, emblematic of supremacy in Eastern U.S. small-college football. The Bulls were invited to play in the Tangerine Bowl against Florida State. The 1958 Northeastern State Redmen football team represented Northeastern State University as a member of the Oklahoma Collegiate Conference (OCC) during the 1958 NAIA football season. In their third season under head coach Harold "Tuffy" Stratton, the Redmen compiled a perfect 11–0 record (6–0 against OCC opponents) and won the OCC championship. The ''Brownwood Bulletin'' is a daily newspaper based in Brownwood, Texas, United States. History Brownwood attorney William Harding Mayes purchased the weeklies ''Brownwood Bulletin'' in the 1886 and ''Brownwood Banner'' in the 1887, consolidating them into the ''Brownwood Banner-Bulletin''. His brother H.F. Mayes and he started the daily ''Brownwood Daily Bulletin'' on October 15, 1900. He published the newspaper until 1914. H.F. Mayes and J.C. White bought the newspaper operation in 1919 and operated it until 1940, when C.C. Woodson bought the daily ''Bulletin''.
