1958 FIFA World Cup Squads
Below are the squads for the 1958 FIFA World Cup final tournament in Sweden. France (1), Northern Ireland (19), Scotland (6), Sweden (5) and Wales (14) had players representing foreign clubs. For the first time, seven players (one French, five Swedish and one Welsh) were selected from clubs from nations that did not qualify for the tournament (Italy and Spain). 1958 FIFA World Cup
The 1958 FIFA World Cup was the sixth FIFA World Cup, a quadrennial football tournament for men's senior national teams, and was played in Sweden from 8 to 29 June 1958. It was the first FIFA World Cup to be played in a Nordic country. Brazil beat Sweden 5–2 in the final in the Stockholm suburb of Solna to claim their first title. The tournament also marked the arrival of a then 17-year-old Pelé on the world stage. This was the first appearance of Wales at the FIFA World Cup and they would not qualify for another until 64 years later. There were also debut appearances for Northern Ireland and the Soviet Union. Host selection Argentina, Chile, Mexico, and Sweden expressed interest in hosting the tournament. Hans Schäfer
Hans Schäfer (19 October 1927 – 7 November 2017) was a German footballer who played as an outside left. Career Schäfer was born in Zollstock, Cologne. He played for 1. FC Köln between 1948 and 1965, and for the West Germany national team, earning 39 caps and scoring 15 goals. He played in three World Cups, in 1954, 1958, and 1962, earning a winner's medal in 1954 and scoring a total of seven goals from all of West Germany's total 15 matches played in the three editions. Between 1957 and 1962, Schäfer captained Germany 16 times. Schäfer's position was that of an outside left. In the latter stages of his career, he became an inside left forward. Rudolf "Rudi" Hoffmann (11 February 1935 – 16 October 2020) was a German footballer. He played for Viktoria Aschaffenburg, VfB Stuttgart and FK Pirmasens. Karl-Heinz Schnellinger (born 31 March 1939) is a German former footballer who played as a defender. An athletic and hard-tackling player, with a strong physique, he was nicknamed the "Volkswagen" for his continuity of performance, both in quantity and in quality, and for his versatility; indeed, although he was usually deployed as a full-back, he was capable of playing anywhere along the back, and could also play as a centre-back, as a sweeper, or even as a defensive midfielder. Hans Sturm (3 September 1935 – 24 June 2007) was a German Association football, football player. He was born in Świerzawa, Schönau an der Katzbach, Lower Silesia and died in Cologne. The goalscoring inside right midfielder, who won the first Bundesliga trophy with 1. FC Köln in 1964, played just one of his three internationals for West Germany national football team, West Germany outside a FIFA World Cup. Therefore, he was part at the 1958 FIFA World Cup and at the 1962 FIFA World Cup, playing one match on each occasion. With 1. Bernhard Klodt
Bernhard "Berni" Klodt (26 October 1926 – 23 May 1996) was a German football player. He was born in Gelsenkirchen-Bismarck; the goalkeeper Hans Klodt was his brother. Football career In his club career, Klodt played mainly for FC Schalke 04. He debuted in the senior team of the club on 17 January 1943 at the age of 16, where he scored a goal in a 6–2 victory over Westfalia Herne. Aged 36, Klodt ended his career in 1963 with the start of the Bundesliga. In his last game, he scored the only goal in Schalke's 1–0 victory against the Bulgarian national team on 18 June 1963. He played in 330 Oberliga West games in which he scored 129 goals. Between 1950 and 1959, Klodt played 19 times and scored three goals for the Germany national football team.
