Winnipeg Monarchs (MJHL)
The Winnipeg Monarchs were a Canadian junior ice hockey team that competed in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League from 1930 to 1978. History The Winnipeg Monarchs junior team was founded in 1930. From 1930 to 1936, they co-existed with the Winnipeg Monarchs senior hockey team. The junior Monarchs won the Memorial Cup as Canadian Junior Hockey Champions three times, in 1935, 1937 and 1946. In 1946, George Robertson scored the winning goal in the seventh game of the 1946 Memorial Cup Final before a sell out crowd at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, Ontario. The Monarchs were also finalists in 1932, losing to Sudbury Wolves in the final, and 1951, losing to the Barrie Flyers. In addition the three Memorial Cup titles, the team won ten Turnbull Cups as Manitoba Junior Hockey League champions and five Abbott Cups as Western Canadian junior hockey champions. Bill Allum
William James Douglas Allum (October 9, 1916 – March 14, 1992) was a Canadian ice hockey defenceman and coach. He played one game in the National Hockey League, with the New York Rangers on November 16, 1940. The rest of his career, which lasted from 1937 to 1953, was spent in minor and senior leagues. He later coached the 1959 Memorial Cup-winning Winnipeg Braves. Playing career Born in Winnipeg, Allum moved through the local hockey ranks, playing for the junior-level Winnipeg Rangers, and senior-level Winnipeg Canada Packers of the OHASL, competing for the latter in the 1937 Allan Cup tournament. That October, Allum was signed by the New York Rangers, who assigned him to their local farm team, the EAHL New York Rovers. In his second season with the Rovers, Allum was named a First Team EAHL All-Star, and earned a call up to the Philadelphia Ramblers of the IAHL. Brandon Sun
''The Brandon Sun'' is a Monday through Saturday newspaper printed in Brandon, Manitoba. It is the primary newspaper of record for western Manitoba and includes substantial political, crime, business and sports news. ''The Brandon Sun'' also publishes a weekly Westman This Week edition featuring local columns and events listings that is distributed free to the entire city. It was founded by Will White, with the first edition being printed on January 19, 1882. After some time under a board of directors, J.B. Whitehead purchased the majority of shares in 1903, and took full control in 1911. He ran the paper until 1937 when his son Ernest C. Whitehead took it over. The Whitehead family controlled ''The Brandon Sun'' until 1987, when it was sold to Thomson Newspapers, who owned it until 2001. The ''Winnipeg Free Press'' (or WFP; founded as the ''Manitoba Free Press'') is a daily (excluding Sunday) broadsheet newspaper in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It provides coverage of local, provincial, national, and international news, as well as current events in sports, business, and entertainment and various consumer-oriented features, such as homes and automobiles appear on a weekly basis. The WFP was founded in 1872, only two years after Manitoba had joined Confederation (1870), and predated Winnipeg's own incorporation (1873). The ''Winnipeg Free Press'' has since become the oldest newspaper in Western Canada that is still active. William Hardin "Navy Bill" Saunders (June 20, 1898 – March 13, 1950) was an American college football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at Colorado State Teachers College—now the University of Northern Colorado—from 1928 to 1931, at the University of Colorado at Boulder from 1932 to 1934, and at the University of Denver from 1936 to 1938, compiling a career college football record of 44–28–8.
