1957 Motocross World Championship
The 1957 Motocross Worl Championship was the 1st edition of the Motocross World Championship organized by the FIM and reserved for 500cc motorcycles. Summary After five editions of the European Championship, from 1952 to 1956, the championship from 1957 took the name of the World Championship, at least for the 500cc class. The 250cc class, introduced this season, will also dispute five running-in seasons, from 1957 to 1961, a period in which it will take on the name of the European Cup, to become World Championship as well starting from the 1962 season. From May 5 to August 25 the 500cc class held 9 grands prix which awarded points to the first six classified competitors, respectively: 8, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1. The score in the final classification of each competitor was calculated on the best four results. Ettelbruck ( lb, Ettelbréck , german: Ettelbrück ) is a commune with town status in central Luxembourg, with a population of inhabitants. Monark
Monark, also known as Cykelfabriken Monark AB and Monark AB, is a Swedish bicycle, moped and motorcycle manufacturer, established in Varberg, Sweden, in 1908 by the industrialist Birger Svensson. As of 2016, Monark is valued at 11.5 billion kr. Company history In the 1950s, Monark had a successful record in off-road motorcycle competitions. Sten Lundin
Sten Lundin (20 November 1931 – 3 June 2016) was a Swedish professional motocross racer. He competed in the Motocross World Championships from 1955 to 1966. Motocross career Lundin won the F.I.M. 500cc motocross world championship in 1959 riding a Monark. In the 1960 world championship, he finished in second place, two points behind Bill Nilsson. In 1961 he recaptured the 500cc world championship riding a Monark which had been re-badged as a Lito. He dropped to third place in the world championship in 1962, finished second to Rolf Tibblin in the 1963 world championship and, third in the 1964 world championship. BSA Motorcycles
BSA motorcycles were made by the Birmingham Small Arms Company Limited (BSA), which was a major British industrial combine, a group of businesses manufacturing military and sporting firearms; bicycles; motorcycles; cars; buses and bodies; steel; iron castings; hand, power, and machine tools; coal cleaning and handling plants; sintered metals; and hard chrome process. A government-organised rescue operation in 1973 led to the takeover of BSA-Triumph motorcycle operations by Norton-Villiers, later known as Norton Villiers Triumph. At its peak, BSA (including Triumph) was the largest motorcycle producer in the world. In the late 1950s and early 1960s poor management and failure to develop new products in the motorcycle division led to a dramatic decline of sales to its major USA market. Jeff Smith (motorcyclist)
Jeffrey Vincent Smith MBE (born 1934) is an English former professional motorcycle racer. His achievements in motorcycle racing include two FIM 500cc Motocross World Championships (1964, 1965), two British Trials Championships, multiple British Experts Trial wins, four individual race wins in the Motocross des Nations, one Scottish Six Days Trial win and eight ISDT Gold Medals. He was a member of the BSA factory racing team. In 1970, Smith was awarded the title of Member of the Order of the British Empire. Riding career Born in Colne, Lancashire, England, Smith began in competitions as a trials rider, becoming so successful that he was offered a place on the Norton factory team. After moving to BSA, he won the 1953 and 1954 British Trials Championship. BSA asked Smith to compete in motocross racing which he did with such success that he soon began to concentrate on a motocross career. Hawkstone Park
Hawkstone Park is was a destination on the English Grand Tour and is a historic landscape park with pleasure grounds and gardens historically associated with Soulton Hall and Hawkstone Hall. It is located north east of the small village of Weston-under-Redcastle, near to Wem, in Shropshire, England. It is known for its follies.
