1956 Southern Area League
The 1956 Southern Area League was the third season of the regional third tier/division of speedway racing in the United Kingdom British teams. Brafield Flying Foxes were no longer competitors with Southern Rovers taking their place. Southern Rovers had no track and raced all their 'home' fixtures on away tracks. Summary Rye House Roosters were the champions for the second consecutive season. Vic Ridgeon of Rye House topped the averages. Although the Southern Area League continued, it became the second tier division instead of the third tier division. There was not another third division of British speedway until 1996 when the Conference was inaugurated. Final table Leading Averages Riders' Championship Leo McAuliffe won the Riders' Championship. The final was held at Rye House Stadium on 30 September, after initially being postponed on the 9 Spetember because of rain. Southern Area League
The Southern Area League was the regional third and then regional second tier of speedway racing in the United Kingdom for Southern British teams as a replacement for the defunct Southern League. Eastbourne Eagles
The Eastbourne Eagles were a British speedway team, based at Arlington Stadium, near Eastbourne, England, that raced in the SGB Championship. History Speedway was initially introduced to Eastbourne in 1929. During their first league season they were the 1947 Speedway National League Division Three champions. Despite winning the title at their first attempt they were forced to close down due to a petrol ban enforced at their Arlington Stadium. They decided to transfer their team to Hastings Saxons and at the beginning of 1948 the Speedway Control Board granted a licence to Hastings to stage speedway. Eastbourne would not compete again in the league until they joined the Southern Area League in 1954. Colin Gooddy
Colin William Gooddy (22 June 1933 – 13 April 2019) was an international motorcycle speedway rider for the England national speedway team. The British Newspaper Archive web site provides access to searchable digitized archives of British and Irish newspapers. It was launched in November 2011. History The British Library Newspapers section was based in Colindale in north London, until 2013, and is now divided between the St Pancras and Boston Spa sites. The library has an almost complete collection of British and Irish newspapers since 1840. This is partly because of the legal deposit legislation of 1869, which required newspapers to supply a copy of each edition of a newspaper to the library. London editions of national daily and Sunday newspapers are complete back to 1801. In total, the collection consists of 660,000 bound volumes and 370,000 reels of microfilm containing tens of millions of newspapers with 52,000 titles on 45 km of shelves. Rye House Stadium
Rye House Stadium is a former greyhound racing and speedway venue in Rye Road, Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire. It is situated adjacent to the River Lea Navigation. Origins The name Rye House originates from a collection of medieval buildings on an area known as the Isle of Rye due to the fact that the land was directly next door to the River Lea/Lee and in particular the Lee Navigation. When the stadium was constructed in 1935 it was put next door to Rye House on a spare plot which is where the name for the stadium came from. Rye House had been the family home for the Parr family that included Catherine in the 16th century and later a workhouse and tourist attraction in the 19th century. All that remains today of the original Rye House is the gatehouse found to the north of the stadium. Southern Area League Riders' Championship
The Southern Area League Riders' Championship was a contest between the top riders with the highest average points total from motorcycle speedway clubs competing in the Southern Area League in the United Kingdom. It was held in each year that the league existed - between 1954 and 1959 and also during 1960, when several teams without league racing raced a series of challenge matches. The event was superseded by the Provincial League Riders' Championship because the Provincial League replaced the Southern Area League in 1960. Ross Gilbertson
Vernon Walter Ross Gilbertson (2 February 1931 – 8 February 2009) was a motorcycle speedway rider from Scotland. Career Gilbertson started racing in the British leagues during the 1954 Southern Area League, when riding for the California Poppies and helped them win the league title. He rode for California during both the 1955 and 1956 seasons, improving his average significantly to 9.00 in 1956. In 1957, California switched their promotion to Aldershot Shots and Gilbertson recorded an even better average of 9.30. This led to him to being signed by Southampton Saints in the top league for the 1958 Speedway National League. He also doubled up for Eastbourne Eagles in the Southern Area League, where he helped the south coast club win the league title in 1959. California Poppies
California Poppies were a British speedway team based at Longmoor Speedway California in England, California Country Park, Nr Wokingham, Berkshire. History The California Poppies raced in the California Country Park in an area known as California in England at the time, the track was situated on the north west side of Longmoor Lake (51°22'54.3"N 0°52'35.4"W) in an area that formed part of Longmoor Bog and the track had a concrete starting grid. They first raced in 1954 in the 1954 Southern Area League and were crowned champions. Southern Rovers
Southern Rovers were a British motorcycle speedway team between 1956 and 1959. They were the champions of the Southern Area League during 1957. The team were unique to speedway at the time because they completed a league season despite having no home stadium to ride from. History The team were created in 1956 following the demise of Brafield Flying Foxes. The Southern Area League was faced with a serious problem in that only three teams would have lined up for the season, therefore the promoters got together and encouraged the formation of a team that would race at the three venues of the other league teams. Home fixtures for Southern Rovers would not be held at the team's stadium that they were riding against but away fixtures would. Rovers' team manager Les King also lost the services of their rider Vic Hall (formerly of Brafield) to injury. Rye House Rockets
The Rye House Rockets were a speedway team based at Rye House Stadium, Hoddesdon, England. They competed in various British speedway leagues from 1954 to 2018. History Rye House began life in 1934 hosting open meetings. Whilst at Hackney in 1937, Dicky Case took over the sixty acre estate of Rye House and set up a training school at Rye House Stadium, operating under the name of the Hackney Motor Club. Northampton International Raceway
Northampton Shaleway also known as Brafield, is used for BriSCA F1 Stock Cars, BriSCA Formula 2 Stock Cars, V8 Hotstox, and various other forms of oval motor sport including National Hot Rods, Banger racing, Saloon Stock Cars, Ministox and Rebels. It also briefly hosted speedway and greyhound racing. Location and History It is located 4 miles south east of Northampton between Brafield-on-the-Green and Horton on the Brafield/Horton Road, Northamptonshire, England. It hosts BriSCA F1 and F2 Stock Car Racing from March through to November. The Tarmac Oval and Figure of 8 track is in length and surrounded by a steel plate fence. Brafield was originally built in 1949 by Dave Hughes who promoted Skirrow Midget Racing. The track was purchased by John La Trobe in 1955 and the first Stock Car event was held on 15 August 1955.
