A by-election, also known as a special election in the United States and the Philippines, a bye-election in Ireland, a bypoll in India, or a Zimni election (Urdu: ضمنی انتخاب, supplementary election) in Pakistan, is an election used to fill an office that has become vacant between general elections. Mid Ulster is a parliamentary constituency in the UK House of Commons. The current MP is Francie Molloy of Sinn Féin. Constituency profile The seat covers a rural area to the west of Lough Neagh, including part of the Sperrins. The seat is nationalist-leaning. 1955 Mid Ulster By-election
The by-election held in Mid Ulster on 11 August 1955 was called as a result of a vote in the British parliament on 18 July 1955 which voted 197 votes to 63 to nullify the result of the previous 1955 UK General Election in the constituency. At that election, Sinn Féin candidate Tom Mitchell took the seat. In the by-election, Mitchell managed to retain the seat with an increase in the number of votes. Tom Mitchell (Irish Politician)
Thomas James Mitchell (29 July 1931 – 22 July 2020) was an Irish republican. He was active in the Irish Republican Army and took part in a raid on Omagh barracks in 1954, being captured and imprisoned. While in jail he was twice elected as a Member of the United Kingdom Parliament, but was disqualified and his elections overturned. Omagh raid Mitchell was born in Dublin on 29 July 1931, and was working there as a bricklayer in 1954. He took part in an unsuccessful IRA raid on a British Army barracks in Omagh, County Tyrone in October 1954, and as a result received a sentence of 10 years imprisonment for treason felony. General election While serving his sentence in Crumlin Road prison, Mitchell was nominated as a Sinn Féin candidate on an abstentionist platform for the Mid-Ulster constituency in the May 1955 UK general election. Charles Beattie
Charles Beattie (3 August 1899 – 10 March 1958) was a Northern Irish farmer and auctioneer. Active in the Ulster Farmers' Union and in Unionist associations, he achieved senior office in the Orange Order and the Royal Black Institution and served on Omagh Rural District Council from 1952 until his death. He is principally known for an exceptionally brief career as a Member of the United Kingdom Parliament representing Mid Ulster: he did not win an election, but was declared elected when his opponent was disqualified. However, a few weeks after he took his seat, he was discovered to be holding an "office of profit under the Crown" which disqualified him. George Forrest (Northern Ireland Politician)
George Forrest (26 October 1921 – 10 December 1968) was a unionist politician in Northern Ireland who served as MP for Mid Ulster from 1956 until his death. George Forrest was the son of Joseph Forrest (died 22 February 1968, aged 81) of Gortagammon, Tullyhogue, Cookstown, County Tyrone. Forrest was first elected in the 1956 Mid Ulster by-election which was called after two previous MPs had been declared ineligible to sit. Initially elected as an independent, Forrest soon joined the Ulster Unionist Party and successfully contested the seat in three general elections. He became a prominent supporter of Prime Minister of Northern Ireland Terence O'Neill's liberal policies and became reviled by many of O'Neill's opponents. In 1967 he was pulled off a Twelfth of July platform in Coagh and kicked unconscious by fellow members of the Orange Order. Michael O'Neill (politician)
Michael O'Neill (7 October 1909 – 4 October 1976) was an Irish politician in the United Kingdom. O'Neill was educated at Dromore National School and Bellisle Academy. He was a farmer and a chairman of the Gaelic Athletic Association. He served as a councillor on Tyrone County Council and resigned as a member of Omagh rural council as a protest about the allocation of housing. O'Neill was elected Member of Parliament for the Mid Ulster constituency in 1951 as an Independent Nationalist, serving in the House of Commons. He was later associated with the Anti-Partition of Ireland League. He retired at the 1955 general election and the Mid Ulster seat was narrowly won by Tom Mitchell of Sinn Féin.
