1954 European Athletics Championships
The 5th European Athletics Championships were held at Stadion Neufeld from 25–29 August 1954 in the Swiss capital Bern. Contemporaneous reports on the event were given in the Glasgow Herald. Roger Bannister
Sir Roger Gilbert Bannister (23 March 1929 – 3 March 2018) was an English neurologist and middle-distance athlete who ran the first sub-4-minute mile. At the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki, Bannister set a British record in the 1500 metres and finished in fourth place. This achievement strengthened his resolve to become the first athlete to finish the mile run in under four minutes. He accomplished this feat on 6 May 1954 at Iffley Road track in Oxford, with Chris Chataway and Chris Brasher providing the pacing. When the announcer, Norris McWhirter, declared "The time was three...", the cheers of the crowd drowned out Bannister's exact time, which was 3 minutes and 59.4 seconds. He had attained this record with minimal training, while practising as a junior doctor. Bannister's record lasted just 46 days. Ossi Mildh
Sven Osvald "Ossi" Mildh (12 May 1930 – 16 September 2015) was a Finnish hurdler. Mildh won bronze medals at the 1954 European Championships in the 400 metres hurdles and the 4 × 400 metres relay. Career Mildh was Finnish champion three times in the 400 m hurdles and once in the 110 m hurdles. At the 1954 European Championships in Bern he won an unexpected bronze medal in the 400 m hurdles in 51.5. The time which was a new Finnish record, would remain his personal best and was only broken as the record of his club, HIFK, in 2014. He won another bronze in the 4 × 400 metres relay as part of the Finnish team; Finland originally finished fourth, but moved up a spot when Great Britain was disqualified. Yuriy Lituyev
Yuriy Nikolaevich Lituyev (russian: Юрий Николаевич Литуев) (April 11, 1925 – March 2, 2000) was a Soviet athlete who competed mainly in the 400 metre hurdles. He trained in Leningrad and later in Moscow at the Armed Forces sports society. Lituyev took part in the second world war, where he was a battery commander. Frederick John Parker (6 September 1927 – 20 February 2022) was a British international hurdler known informally as Jumpin’ Jack Flash. Frank Sando
Frank Dennis Sando (14 March 1931 – 13 October 2012) was a British long-distance runner. A two-time winner at the International Cross Country Championships (1955, 1957), Sando represented Great Britain in two consecutive Summer Olympic Games. Early life Sando was born on 31 March 1931 in Maidstone, to Ernest and Maria Sando. Attending Maidstone Grammar School, Sando first began his involvement in athletics at sixteen, breaking the school mile record. Simultaneously, he began an amateur career at Maidstone Harriers, winning the Kent County Junior Cross-Country Championship in 1948 and the Kent Youth Cross-Country Championship in 1949. He finished fourth in the English Youth Cross-Country Championship in 1948 and 1949. Having left school, Sando undertook National Service in October 1949, joining the army. Emil Zátopek
Emil Zátopek (; 19 September 1922 – 21 November 2000) was a Czech long-distance runner best known for winning three gold medals at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki. He won gold in the 5,000 metres and 10,000 metres runs, but his final medal came when he decided at the last minute to compete in the first marathon of his life. He was nicknamed the "Czech Locomotive". In 1954, Zátopek was the first runner to break the 29-minute barrier in the 10,000 metres. Three years earlier in 1951, he had broken the hour for running 20 km. He was considered one of the greatest runners of the 20th century and was also known for his brutally tough training methods.
