1954 Cannes Film Festival
The 7th Cannes Film Festival was held from 25 March to 9 April 1954. With Jean Cocteau as President of the Jury, the Grand Prix went to the '' Gate of Hell'' by Teinosuke Kinugasa. The festival opened with '' Le Grand Jeu'' by Robert Siodmak. This was the last festival with a predominantly French jury. As the festival was becoming more and more a pole of showbiz attraction, scandals and romances of stars were appearing in the press. In 1954, the Simone Silva affair during the Cannes Festival ended up in the destruction of her career as an actor and her premature death, three years later. Palme D'Or Du Court Métrage
The Short Film Palme d'Or (french: Palme d'Or du court métrage) is the highest prize given to a short film at the Cannes Film Festival. Since the creation of the Cinéfondation La ''Cinéfondation'' is a foundation under the aegis of the Cannes Film Festival, created to inspire and support the next generation of international filmmakers. Ladislao Vajda
Ladislao Vajda (born Weisz László; 18 August 1906, Budapest – 25 March 1965, Barcelona) was a Hungarian-Spanish film director who made films in Spain, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Italy and West Germany. Biography He was born in Budapest, his father being an actor and screenwriter. Vajda started his career as film editor (even though he also worked as artistic designer and writer) for different directors, such as Billy Wilder and Henry Koster. Eventually, he undertook his first directorial effort in his native country, Hungary. Before World War II he became established in Italy, where he directed two movies: ''La zia smemorata'' (1940) and ' (1941). Finally, he moved to Spain, where he continued directing films. The first film from his Spanish period was ''Se vende un palacio'' ('' A Palace for Sale''), released in 1943. Adventures Of The Barber Of Seville
''Adventures of the Barber of Seville'' (French: ''L'aventurier de Séville'', Spanish: ''Aventuras del barbero de Sevilla'') is a 1954 French-Spanish comedy film directed by Ladislao Vajda and starring Luis Mariano, Lolita Sevilla and Danielle Godet. It was entered into the 1954 Cannes Film Festival. Plot Figaro, a singing barber, gets caught by some bandits who use his abilities to attract travelers and assault them. To escape justice he joins the army. Meanwhile, the bandits are all captured where the authorities give them a stark choice - death by garrote or join the army. Both the bandits and Figaro end up serving in the same military company. They are shipped to Puerto Rico and fight pirates, returning to Spain with acclaim. Now he will know the rich salons and the bright side of life.
