1953 VFL Grand Final
The 1953 VFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the Geelong Football Club and Collingwood Football Club, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 26 September 1953. It was the 56th annual Grand Final of the Victorian Football League, staged to determine the premiers for the 1953 VFL season. The match, attended by 89,149 spectators, was won by Collingwood by 12 points, the club's 12th premiership victory. This was the third successive Grand Final appearance for the Cats, who were attempting to win three successive flags after having defeated Essendon in the 1951 VFL Grand Final and Collingwood in the 1952 VFL Grand Final. Collingwood had not won a premiership since winning the 1936 VFL Grand Final. Lerrel Keith Sharp (6 June 1933 – 15 December 2020) was an Australian rules footballer, who played for Scottsdale Football Club, Scottsdale and North Launceston Football Club, North Launceston in the Northern Tasmanian Football Association (1886–1986), Northern Tasmanian Football Association (NTFL) and Collingwood Football Club, Collingwood in the Australian Football League, Victorian Football League (VFL). Keith Batchelor
Keith Vincent Batchelor (4 October 1930 – 24 September 2009) was a former Australian rules footballer, who played in the Victorian Football League (1897–1989), Victorian Football League (VFL) for Collingwood Football Club, Collingwood and in the 1950s. Mick Twomey
Michael John Twomey (25 September 1931 – 14 December 2015) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Collingwood Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). At 185cm (6'1") in height, Collingwood's Mick Twomey was taller than his brothers Bill and Pat. Recruited from Yarra Valley, he played most of his 157 VFL games between 1951 and 1961 as a ruckman. In fact he was short for a ruckman; but he had remarkable spring, and newspapers often carried photos of him seeming to soar over opponents. Thorold Merrett
Thorold Merrett (born 30 September 1933) is a former Australian rules footballer, who played in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Footballer From the Victorian country town Cobden, Merrett was a small footballer who was a keen Richmond fan who wanted to play league football for the Tigers. At 16 years of age, Merrett was rejected by Richmond legend Jack Dyer because of his light frame, but he was given another opportunity at Victoria Park, where he stood out in a set of practice games for Collingwood just before the 1950 season. Pat Twomey (2 April 1929 – 22 November 1969) was an Australian rules footballer, who played in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Pat Twomey joined Collingwood in 1947. Des Healey
Desmond Jules Healey (5 September 1927 – 18 March 2009) was an Australian rules footballer, who played in the VFL/AFL with the Collingwood Football Club, and was also a first-grade cricketer with the Collingwood Cricket Club. He married the daughter of Jack Bisset. After spending 3 years in the reserves team, Healey finally broke into the senior side in 1948. He played every game in 1948 and missed only one in 1949 when he won interstate selection. The combination of Healey, Thorold Merrett and Bill Twomey, Jr., gave Collingwood a lethal centre line. Healey was a great mark for his size and dazzled the crowd with his evasive ground work and polished skills. He always had great control of the ball and was the master of the pinpoint pass.
