Zandvoort () is a municipality in the province of North Holland, Netherlands. It is one of the major beach resorts of the Netherlands; it has a long sandy beach. It is bordered by coastal dunes of Zuid-Kennemerland National Park and the Amsterdam water supply dunes. It hosts the country's most prominent motor racing circuit, Circuit Zandvoort. 1952 Dutch Grand Prix
The 1952 Dutch Grand Prix was a Formula Two race held on 17 August 1952 at the Circuit Zandvoort. It was race 7 of 8 in the 1952 World Championship of Drivers, in which each Grand Prix was run to Formula Two rules rather than the Formula One regulations normally used. The 90-lap race was won by Ferrari driver Alberto Ascari after he started from pole position. His teammates Giuseppe Farina and Luigi Villoresi finished in second and third places. Ascari overtook Fangio's record for the most race wins, scoring his seventh at this race. The XIII Grand Prix d'Albi was a motor race, run to Formula One rules, held on 5 August 1951 at the Circuit Les Planques, Albi. The race was run over 34 laps of the circuit, and was won by French driver Maurice Trintignant in a Simca-Gordini Type 15. Trintignant also set pole and fastest lap. 1951 Scottish Grand Prix
The 1951 Scottish Grand Prix was a 50 lap motor race held on 21 July 1951 at Winfield Airfield in Berwickshire. Although run to Formula One regulations, the paucity of the entries led to the organisers opening up the race to other categories. An entry had been made for the BRM Type 15 but it failed to appear. Its driver Reg Parnell was loaned local driver John Brown's HWM- Alta; Parnell started from pole position but broke a drive shaft as he left the start line. Archie Butterworth's 4WD A.J.B. led briefly before David Murray took over with a Maserati 4CLT. Joe Kelly's Alta challenged and set fastest lap but retired with gearbox problems. Pierre Levegh
Pierre Eugène Alfred Bouillin (22 December 1905 – 11 June 1955) was a French sportsman and racing driver. He took the racing name Pierre Levegh in memory of his uncle, a pioneering driver who died in 1904. Levegh died in the 1955 Le Mans disaster which also killed 83 spectators during the 1955 24 Hours of Le Mans automobile race. Career Levegh, who was born in Paris, France, was also an ice hockey and tennis player. In motorsport he competed in Formula One for the Talbot-Lago team in 1950 and 1951, starting six races, retiring in three, and scoring no points. At Le Mans he raced for Talbot in four races, finishing fourth in 1951. In 1952, driving single-handedly, his car suffered an engine failure in the last hour of the race with a four lap lead. The failure was due to a bolt in the central crankshaft bearing having come loose many hours earlier in the race, although many fans placed the blame on driver fatigue. Louis Chiron
Louis Alexandre Chiron (3 August 1899 – 22 June 1979) was a Monégasque racing driver who competed in rallies, sports car races, and Grands Prix. Among the greatest drivers between the two World Wars, his career embraced over thirty years, starting in 1927, and ending at the end of the 1950s. He is still the oldest driver ever to have finished in Formula One, having taken 6th place in the 1955 Monaco Grand Prix when he was 55. Three years later he became the oldest to start a Formula One race, at 58. The Bugatti Chiron takes its name from him. Career Louis Chiron gained interest in cars and racing when he was a teenager. He started driving in Grand Prix races after World War I, in which he was seconded from an artillery regiment as a driver for Maréchal Pétain and Maréchal Foch. Johnny Claes
Octave John Claes (11 August 1916 – 3 February 1956) was an English-born racing driver who competed for Belgium. Before his fame as a racing driver, Claes was also a jazz trumpeter and successful bandleader in Britain. Early life and jazz career Claes was born in London to a Scottish mother and Belgian father. He was educated in England at Lord Williams's School. In England, he began playing trumpet in a jazz band that included Max Jones on reeds, and another with Billy Mason on piano. In the 1930s he moved to the Netherlands, where he worked with Valaida Snow and Coleman Hawkins. He also worked with Jack Kluger's band in Belgium. Returning to England, he led his own group, the Claepigeons, making a recording in 1942. In the late 1940s he abandoned his jazz career and settled in Belgium as a professional racing driver. John Benjamin Heath (racing Driver)
John Benjamin Heath FRS FSA (6 June 1790 – 16 January 1879) was Governor of the Bank of England from 1845 to 1847. Early life He was born the son of the merchant John Heath and grandson of the scholar Benjamin Heath. He was educated at Harrow School. Career Like his father, he became a successful London merchant who was appointed to be Deputy Governor of the Bank of England from 1842 to 1845, replaced William Cotton as Governor and was succeeded in turn by William Robinson. He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1832 and a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1843. Heath was appointed Consul General to the King of Sardinia and in 1867 he was created a Baron of the Kingdom of Italy. On his death in 1879 he was buried in Highgate Cemetery. Lance Macklin
Lance Noel Macklin (2 September 1919 – 29 August 2002) was a British racing driver from England. He participated in 15 Formula One World Championship Grands Prix, debuting on 18 May 1952. He was infamously involved in the 1955 Le Mans disaster, starting the initial chain reaction. Early life Macklin's father was the automotive entrepreneur Noel Macklin, founder of both the Invicta and Railton car companies, as well as Fairmile Marine, a manufacturer of motor gun and torpedo boats during World War II. Macklin was born in Kensington, and educated at Eton College. He volunteered for service with the Royal Navy in 1939 and (in line with his father's business) was assigned to work on motor gun boats.
