1950 United Kingdom General Election In Northern Ireland
The 1950 United Kingdom general election in Northern Ireland was held on 23 February as part of the wider general election. The Representation of the People Act 1948 reorganised constituencies: all MPs were now elected single-seat constituencies using FPTP, ending the two-seat constituencies which had been in place till then, and the university constituency of Queen's University of Belfast was abolished. Results In the election as a whole, the Labour Party led by Clement Attlee as Prime Minister was returned with a narrow majority, while the Conservative Party, which included the Ulster Unionists, led by Sir Winston Churchill, continued in opposition. List Of Parliamentary Constituencies In Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland is divided into 18 parliamentary constituencies: 4 borough constituencies in Belfast and 14 county constituencies elsewhere. Section 33 of the Northern Ireland Act 1998 provides that the constituencies for the Northern Ireland Assembly are the same as the constituencies that are used for the United Kingdom Parliament. Parliamentary constituencies are not used for local government, which is instead carried out by 11 district councils; these often have different boundaries. Walter Smiles
Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Walter Dorling Smiles CIE DSO DL (8 November 1883 – 31 January 1953) was a Northern Irish politician. Sir Walter was the son of William Holmes Smiles, director of Belfast Ropeworks, and grandson of Samuel Smiles. Sir Walter served during the First World War and, in the 1920s, managed a tea estate in Assam, there he became involved in local government and was a member of the Assam Legislative Council. During the First World War; he obtained a pilots certificate but due to the lack of aircraft he transferred to Royal Naval Armoured Car Division. In 1915 he joined the British Armoured Car Expeditionary Force which was seconded to the Imperial Russian Army to fight against Turkish forces in the Caucasus Campaign. Conolly Gage
Conolly Hugh Gage (10 November 1905 – 3 October 1984) was a British politician and judge. Alan McKibbin
Colonel Alan John McKibbin (2 February 1892 – 2 December 1958) was a Northern Irish company director and politician. After serving in the First World War, he later took charge of the Army Cadet Force in Northern Ireland, and also ran the family estate agency firm. He was also an Ulster Unionist Party Member of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1950 until his death. Wartime service McKibbin was the son of John McKibbin, who ran John McKibbin & Son Ltd. He was born in Belfast and was sent to Campbell College, a leading grammar school in the city. He went to work in the family firm, but on the outbreak of the First World War he enlisted in the British Army. He served throughout the war. In 1922 he married Kathleen Laura Brennan, and they had a son together. After working in the family firm, McKibbin joined the Home Guard during the Second World War. Major James Richard Edwards Harden OBE DSO MC (12 December 1916 – 22 October 2000), known as Richard Harden, was a Northern Irish politician. Born in Tandragee, County Armagh and educated at Bedford School and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He was an Ulster Unionist Member of Parliament for Armagh from a by-election in 1948 until he resigned his seat on 5 November 1954 by the procedural device of accepting the nominally-paid position of Steward of the Manor of Northstead. Armagh or County Armagh was a parliamentary constituency in the House of Commons. It was replaced in boundary changes in 1983. The Act of Union 1800 provided for the Parliament of Ireland to be merged with the Parliament of Great Britain, to form the Parliament of the United Kingdom.
