1950 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Tournament
The 1950 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament was the culmination of the 1949–50 NCAA men's ice hockey season, the 3rd such tournament in NCAA history. It was held between March 16 and 18, 1950, and concluded with Colorado College defeating Boston University 13–4. All games were played at the Broadmoor Ice Palace in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The 13 goals Colorado College scored in the championship game is a record that has been equaled only once (by Colorado College in 1957). Additionally, the 23 goals scored in their two games is a record for one team in a Frozen Four. CC's goal differential (+16) is also a record for an NCAA tournament, matched by Michigan in 1953 and Wisconsin in 1983. Broadmoor World Arena (1938)
The Broadmoor World Arena was a skating rink and hockey arena located at The Broadmoor Resort & Spa in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Originally an outdoor equestrian center and riding academy, the building was enclosed and converted into an ice arena which opened in January 1938. It was the original home of the Colorado College Tigers hockey team, as well as the Broadmoor Skating Club, a major force in the figure skating community. The building served as the first home of the NCAA Hockey Championships, hosting the first ten Final Fours (1948–1957) and once more, in 1969. The arena served as host to the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships in 1962. It also hosted the World Figure Skating Championships five times between 1957 and 1975. Ron Hartwell
Ron Hartwell was a Canadian ice hockey right wing who helped Colorado College win its first national championship in 1950. Career Hartwell Began attending Colorado College in 1948 and joined the varsity hockey team after a year with the freshman squad. Hartwell joined a club that had made the NCAA tournament in consecutive years but had yet to win a game in the championship. He brought a scoring touch to an already powerful team that allowed CC to produce one of the greatest offensive seasons in NCAA history. Hartwell contributed 24 goals in 22 games as the Tigers made their third consecutive appearance and added 4 more goals in two tournament games as Colorado College set numerous NCAA records (many still standing) with 23 goals in their two tournament games. Jack Garrity
John Paul "Jack" Garrity (April 1, 1926 – August 31, 2015) was an American ice hockey player. Garrity was a member of the American 1948 Winter Olympics team. He was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 1986. Career Jack Garrity was one of Massachusetts' most outstanding hockey players in high school, college, the Olympics and at the senior hockey level. Jack skated on greater Boston rinks for over 60 years and in addition to his playing, coached high school hockey for 10 years, refereed high school and NCAA college games for 20 years and taught at hockey camps until he was 70. He also designed and published one of America's first hockey scorebooks, which was widely used by local schools during the 1950s and 1960s. Dick Kelley (ice Hockey)
Richard Anthony Kelley (January 8, 1940 – December 11, 1991) was an American professional baseball player. A left-handed pitcher, Kelley's career extended for 14 seasons, and he spent all or parts of seven years in Major League Baseball as a member of the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves and San Diego Padres. The native of Brighton, Massachusetts, attended Saint Columbkille's High School. He stood and weighed during his playing career. He pitched in 188 Major League games between 1964 and 1969 and in 1971, 61 as a starter. In , as an original member of the San Diego Padres, acquired during the expansion draft, he started 23 games, fourth most on the club. Wally Grant
Wallace Daniel Grant (December 8, 1927 – November 5, 2014) was an American ice hockey player. Grant helped the University of Michigan win the first NCAA National Championship in 1948. He was inducted into the University of Michigan Athletic Hall of Honor in 1987 and the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 1994. Minnesota state championship Grant was born and raised in Leonidas, Minnesota. He was the son of an immigrant father who had worked in an open-pit ore mine since he was a young man, and had become a superintendent for U.S. Steel. Grant learned to skate on an ice rink that his father made by flooding a small grassy area near their home. Tony Frasca
Anthony J. Frasca (1927–1999) was an American ice hockey player and coach for the varsity programs at Colorado College. He helped CC win its first national title in 1950. Career Player Tony Frasca began attending Colorado College in the fall of 1948, joining a team that had made the first NCAA tournament the year before. Frasca began playing with the Tigers after sitting out his freshman year (as was common) and for the third consecutive year Colorado College made the tournament. In the first game Frasca and Tigers knocked off defending champion Boston College 10–3, moving onto their first national title game. Against Boston University the Tigers got down early before rebounding in the second period to take a 3–1 lead into the third.
