1949–50 Georgetown Hoyas Men's Basketball Team
The 1949–50 Georgetown Hoyas men's basketball team represented Georgetown University during the 1949–50 NCAA college basketball season. Francis "Buddy" O'Grady coached it in his first of three seasons as head coach. The team was an independent and played its home games at the D.C. Armory in Washington, D.C. It finished with a record of 12-12 and had no post-season play. Season recap New head coach O'Grady had been a three-year standout guard on the Hoya teams of 1939-1942. After military service in World War II, he had played professional basketball for three seasons with the Washington Capitols and the Rochester Royals before retiring to coach at Georgetown. Although coaches of the freshman team had assisted the varsity teams head coach from time to time, Georgetown had never had a formal assistant coach on the varsity team until this season, when former Georgetown player Jim "Miggs" Reilly became the Hoyas first formal assistant coach. Buddy O'Grady
Francis David "Buddy" O'Grady (January 19, 1920 – February 19, 1992) was an American professional basketball player and coach. A 5'11" guard (basketball), guard from Georgetown University, O'Grady played professionally in the National Basketball Association, Basketball Association of America from 1946 to 1949. He competed for the Washington Capitols, St. Louis Bombers (NBA), St. Louis Bombers, and Providence Steamrollers and averaged 3.7 points per game. For three seasons from 1949 to 1952, O'Grady served as head coach of Georgetown Hoyas men's basketball, Georgetown University's men's basketball team, with an overall record of 35-36 and no post-season tournament appearances. He was elected to Georgetown's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1958. The Rutgers Scarlet Knights men's basketball team represents Rutgers University in NCAA Division I college basketball competition. Rutgers competes in the Big Ten Conference. History The Rutgers men's basketball team played in the Final Four in the 1976 NCAA tournament and ended the 1976 season ranked fourth in the nation, after an 70–86 loss against the Michigan Wolverines in the semifinal round and a 92–106 loss to the UCLA Bruins in the tournament's third-place consolation game. This was the last men's Division I tournament to date to feature two unbeaten teams, as both Indiana, who won that year's title, and Rutgers entered the tournament unbeaten. Rutgers went 31–0 during the regular season. The Scarlet Knights also played in the championship game of the 2004 NIT Final, losing to the Michigan Wolverines 55–62.
