1949 Portland Pilots Football Team
The 1949 Portland Pilots football team was an American football team that represented the University of Portland as an independent during the 1949 college football season. The team compiled a 3–5 record. The coaching staff was led by former Notre Dame star Harry "The Horse" Wright in his first year as head coach. Wright was assisted by two other Notre Dame alumni—Neil Green as line coach and Floyd Simmons as backfield coach. Harry Wright (American Football)
Harry Charles Wright (October 4, 1919 – March 9, 1993) was an American football player and coach. He played college football at the University of Notre Dame, quarterbacking the 1941 Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team to an undefeated record. Wright served as the head football coach at the University of Portland in 1949 and the United States Merchant Marine Academy from 1958 to 1963, compiling a career college football coaching record of 35–28–1. He also worked an assistant coach for the New York Giants of the National Football League (NFL) from 1964 to 1966 under head coach Allie Sherman. 1949 Idaho Vandals Football Team
The 1949 Idaho Vandals football team represented the University of Idaho in the 1949 college football season. The Vandals were led by third-year head coach Dixie Howell and were members of the Pacific Coast Conference. Home games were played on campus at Neale Stadium in Moscow, with one game in Boise, a final time at Public School Field. Idaho was overall and won one of their five PCC games. The Vandals' losing streak in the Battle of the Palouse with neighbor Washington State reached 21 games, with a homecoming loss in Moscow. Idaho tied the Cougars the next year, but the winless streak continued until five years later.
