1949 NAFC Championship
The 1949 NAFC Championship was the second edition of the association football championship for the North American Football Confederation. In 1949, the NAFC Championship served both as a regional championship as well as the regional qualification tournament for the 1950 FIFA World Cup and was held in Mexico City. Four teams were invited, Cuba, Mexico, Canada and the United States, but Canada did not send a team. Mexico easily topped the standings, going undefeated and outscoring the two other teams seventeen goals to two. The United States came in second and Cuba, winless in its four games, was third. As the top two teams qualified for the World Cup, Mexico and the U.S. went to the finals in Brazil. Horacio Casarín
Horacio Casarín Garcilazo (25 May 1918 – 10 April 2005) was a Mexican professional football player and coach who established himself as one of his country's most popular sports figures in the 1940s and 1950s. A symbol for Atlante, the team Casarín served for the majority of his career, the skilled forward also played for Necaxa, León, Asturias, Club América, Real España, Monterrey and Zacatepec in his country, as well as FC Barcelona in Spain and the Mexico national team. Club career At age 17, Casarín debuted for Necaxa. Over the course of his career in Mexico, Casarín scored 236 goals at the amateur and professional levels (the Mexican League was founded in the early 1940s) and represented his country at the 1950 FIFA World Cup held in Brazil and scored a goal during the run of the tournament. Manuel Martin (soccer)
Manuel Oliveira “Youngie” Martin (born December 29, 1917 in Bristol, Rhode Island; died September 5, 1997 in Fall River, Massachusetts) was an American soccer player. He earned seven caps with the U.S. national team between 1947 and 1949 and was a member of the U.S. soccer team at the 1948 Summer Olympics. In 1947, the United States Soccer Federation selected the amateur Ponta Delgada S.C. team from Fall River, Massachusetts to represent the U.S. at the 1947 NAFC Championship. At the time, Ponta Delgada was the reigning National Challenge Cup and National Amateur Cup champions. As a member of the National Cup champions Delgada, Martin traveled to Cuba for the NAFC Championship in July 1947. The U.S. lost both matches, 6-0 to Mexico and 5-2 to Cuba. Ben Wattman
Benjamin "Ben" Wattman is an American former soccer player who earned two caps, scoring one goal, with the U.S. national team in 1949. Wattman earned his first caps in a 6–0 loss to Mexico on September 4, 1949. Fourteen days later, he earned his second cap and scored a goal in a 6–2 loss to Mexico. Both of these games were part of the 1949 NAFC Championship which was used as the regional qualification tournament for the 1950 FIFA World Cup. Despite the two losses to Mexico, the U.S. qualified for the World Cup with a tie and win over Cuba. Wattman was not selected for the World Cup roster. Frank Borghi
Frank Borghi (April 9, 1925 – February 2, 2015) was an American soccer player who earned nine caps at goalkeeper for the national team. He played in the team's famous 1–0 victory against England in the 1950 FIFA World Cup. Athletic career Borghi started his sports career as a professional baseball player, but turned to soccer instead. He chose the position of goalkeeper because he felt he lacked the necessary ball skills to play any other position. In fact, when he was in goal, he never kicked the ball, even for goal kicks (someone else took them); instead, thanks to his arm strength from playing baseball, he always threw the ball after he made a save. José Antonio Roca García (24 May 1928 – 4 May 2007) was a Mexican football player and manager.
