1948 Swedish General Election
General elections were held in Sweden on 19 September 1948. Nohlen, D & Stöver, P (2010) ''Elections in Europe: A data handbook'', p1858 Despite a campaign by a large part of the Swedish press against socializing insurances, controlled foreign trade and rationing regulations still in use since the war, freshman Prime Minister and Social Democratic leader Tage Erlander managed to defeat the People's Party-led opposition under Bertil Ohlin by a higher election turnout. He maintained his government with only minor losses and the Swedish Social Democratic Party remained the largest party, winning 112 of the 230 seats in the Andra kammaren of the Riksdag.Nohlen & Stöver, p1872 Erlander was to stay on as Prime Minister until 1969. Andra Kammaren
The Andra kammaren (lit. Second Chamber) was the lower house of the bicameral Riksdag of Sweden between 1866 and 1970 that replaced the Riksdag of the Estates. Vänstersocialistiska Partiet ( en, Left Socialist Party) was a left-wing political party in Sweden that existed between 1940 and 1963. Albin Ström was a leftwing Social Democrat from Göteborg that broke out of the Social Democratic Party in 1934. With him followed thousands of other Social Democrats from the West Coast-region. The tendency of Ström founded the daily ''Arbetarposten'' (Workers' Mail) and quickly unified itself with the "SKP" of Karl Kilbom and Nils Flyg. Together they formed '' Socialistiska Partiet''. When SP, under the leadership of Nils Flyg, gradually orientated itself towards Nazism, many of its members left the party. The tendency of Ström broke away in 1940 and formed ''Vänstersocialistiska Partiet'', after that Flyg had promoted that the SKP were to be suppressed by the state.
