1948 Nevada Wolf Pack Football Team
The 1948 Nevada Wolf Pack football team was an American football team that represented the University of Nevada as an independent during the 1948 college football season. In its second season under head coach Joe Sheeketski, the Wolf Pack compiled a 9–2 record, outscored opponents 480 to 133, and lost to Villanova 27–7 in the Harbor Bowl at San Diego. Though unranked in the final AP Poll, Nevada was ranked at No. 15 in the final Litkenhous Difference by Score System ratings for 1948. Stan Heath and Alva Tabor played quarterback for Nevada this season. Tabor was one of the first African-Americans to play quarterback for a major college football team. Heath was fifth in the balloting for the Heisman Trophy. Joe Sheeketski
Joseph L. Sheeketski (April 15, 1908 – April 22, 1995) was an American football player, coach, and college athletics administrator. He served as the head football coach at the College of the Holy Cross from 1939 to 1941 and at the University of Nevada, Reno from 1947 to 1950, compiling a career college football record of 39–29–3. Early life and playing career Sheeketski attended prep school in Shadyside, Ohio. He played halfback at the University of Notre Dame from 1930 to 1932 and graduated from the university in 1933. Coaching career From 1933 to 1938, Sheeketski served as the backfield coach at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, working under fellow Notre Dame alumnus, Eddie Anderson. Sheeketski succeeded Anderson as head coach in 1939 when Anderson left for the University of Iowa. Sheeketski was a special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 1942 to 1945. The 1948 Fresno State Bulldogs football team represented Fresno State Normal School—now known as California State University, Fresno—during the 1948 college football season. Fresno State competed in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The team was led by second-year head coach Ken Gleason and played home games at Ratcliffe Stadium on the campus of Fresno City College in Fresno, California. The 1948 Santa Clara Broncos football team was an American football team that represented Santa Clara University as an independent during the 1948 college football season. In their third season under head coach Len Casanova, the Broncos compiled a 7–2–1 record and outscored their opponents by a combined total of 228 to 153. They played a schedule that included elite programs of the era, defeating Oklahoma and Stanford and playing a tie against Michigan State.
