The 1946 VFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the Essendon Football Club and Melbourne Football Club, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 5 October 1946. Herbie Tonkes
Herbie 'Tinker' Tonkes (4 April 1921 – 10 September 1991) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1940s. Tonkes could play a variety of positions, from defence, the wing to half back. He played his early football at Preston Juniors and was recruited to the VFL from Essendon United. War duties limited him to seven appearances in 1944 and he missed the entire 1945 season as he was serving in the Pacific. Cec Ruddell
Cecil Alfred Ruddell (23 May 1917 – 10 December 1990) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1940s. Ruddell was a key player in Essendon's defence in what was a strong decade for the club, just once in his nine seasons did they miss out on the finals. Usually a fullback, it was in that position that he played in the Bomber's 1942 and 1946 VFL premiership sides. Jack Cassin
John William Cassin (1 July 1915 – 3 September 1994) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL) over eleven seasons in twelve years, and served as the captain coach of the Euroa Football Club in 1948, and of the Colac Football Club from 1949 to 1951. Keith Rawle
Keith Trevillian Rawle (29 October 1924 – 6 March 2005) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1940s. Family He was the son of former North Melbourne and Essendon footballer George Rawle. Football Rawle usually played as a forward pocket and had two stints with Essendon. He was a member of Essendon premiership teams in 1946 and again in 1949 when he kicked three goals in what would be his last game. Harry Equid
Harry Equid (8 October 1923 – 2 February 1984) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1940s. Football Equid began his VFL career after serving with the army in World War II and made his debut against North Melbourne, in the final game of the 1945 season, kicking three goals. In 1946 he continued where he had left off and started the season with a goalscoring sequence of three, three and seven. He finished the year with 35 goals, the last of which came from the half forward flank in Essendon's Grand Final win over Melbourne. He was also used as a follower. William Henry Hutchison (28 April 1923 – 18 June 1982), often referred to as "Hutchy", was an Australian rules footballer in the Victorian Football League (VFL) with the Essendon Football Club, who played 290 VFL games, from 1942 to 1957, and kicked 496 goals.
