1945 NCAA Football Rankings
One human poll comprised the 1945 college football season, 1945 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) football rankings. Unlike most sports, college football's governing body, the NCAA, does not bestow a national championship, instead that title is bestowed by one or more different polling agencies. There are two main weekly polls that begin in the preseason—the AP Poll and the Coaches' Poll. The Coaches' Poll began operation in 1950; in addition, the AP Poll did not begin conducting preseason polls until that same year. 1945 Army Cadets Football Team
The 1945 Army Cadets football team was an American football powerhouse that represented the United States Military Academy as an independent and considered to be among the greatest in collegiate history. In their fifth season under head coach Earl "Red" Blaik, the Cadets compiled a 9–0 record, shut out five of nine opponents (including a 48–0 victory over No. 2 Notre Dame and a 61–0 victory over No. 6 Penn), and outscored all opponents by a total of 412 to 46. Army's 1945 season was part of a 32-game undefeated streak that included the entire 1944, 1945, and 1946 seasons. In the final AP Poll released on December 2, Army was ranked No. 1 nationally with 1,160 points, more than 200 points ahead of No. 2 Navy. The Crusaders were led by first-year head coach John "Ox" DaGrosa and played their home games at Fitton Field in Worcester, Massachusetts. The 1945 Oklahoma Sooners football team represented the University of Oklahoma in the 1945 college football season. In their fifth year under head coach Dewey Luster, the Sooners compiled a 5–5 record (4–1 against conference opponents), finished in second place in the Big Six Conference championship, and outscored their opponents by a combined total of 169 to 138. No Sooners received All-America honors in 1945, but five Sooners received all-conference honors: Omer Burgert (end); Lester Jensen (guard); Thomas Tallchief (tackle); Jack Venable (back); and John West (back). 1945 Virginia Cavaliers Football Team
The 1945 Virginia Cavaliers football team represented the University of Virginia during the 1945 college football season. The Cavaliers were led by ninth-year head coach Frank Murray and played their home games at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, Virginia. They competed as independents, finishing with a record of 7–2. On October 8, 1945, Virginia made their first appearance in the AP Poll in school history when they were ranked 20th in the year's first poll. They dropped from the poll the following week, but reentered November 5 as they continued a seven-game win-streak. The Cavaliers did not finish ranked, however, being knocked from the polls after season-ending losses to rivals Maryland and North Carolina. Their first ranked finish would come in 1951. The 1945 Saint Mary's Gaels football team was an American football team that represented Saint Mary's College of California during the 1945 college football season.
