1943 Western Michigan Broncos Football Team
The 1943 Western Michigan Broncos football team represented Michigan College of Education (later renamed Western Michigan University) as an independent during the 1943 college football season. In their second season under head coach John Gill, the Broncos compiled a 4–2 record and outscored their opponents, 151 to 89. The team played its home games at Waldo Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Halfback Bob Mellen was the team captain. Fullback August Camarata received the team's most outstanding player award. The team won two games by over 50 points across the season. In the final Litkenhous Ratings, Western Michigan ranked 59th among the nation's college and service teams with a rating of 81.3. John Gill (coach)
John W. Gill (November 27, 1898 – March 4, 1997) was an American college football and college baseball coach. Gill graduated from Western State Normal School (now known as Western Michigan University) in 1924 and became an assistant football coach under head coach Mike Gary. At the time of the 1930 United States Census, Gill was living in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and his occupation was listed as a teacher at a college. In 1939, Gill recommended that the Western Michigan athletic teams change their mascot from "Hilltoppers" to "Broncos," and his suggestion was adopted by the school. Central Michigan–Western Michigan Football Rivalry
The Central Michigan–Western Michigan football rivalry is an annual college football game between Central Michigan University (CMU) and Western Michigan University (WMU). The winner receives the Victory Cannon. In its first appearance, it was awarded to CMU at the conclusion of the October 18, 2008, game. Victory Cannon A cannon, which represents the cannons that are fired at both CMU's Kelly/Shorts Stadium and WMU's Waldo Stadium, sits atop the trophy and each of the schools' wins are noted on both sides. Although the trophy was not awarded until 2008, the two teams first played one another in 1907. 1943 Great Lakes Navy Bluejackets Football Team
The 1943 Great Lakes Navy Bluejackets football team represented the United States Navy's Great Lakes Naval Training Station (Great Lakes NTS) during the 1943 college football season. The team compiled a 10–2 record, outscored opponents by a total of 257 to 108, and was ranked No. 6 in the final AP Poll. Tony Hinkle, who coached at Butler University before the war, was in his second season as head coach. The Bluejackets played multiple games against teams that were ranked in the final AP Poll, including an upset of national champion Notre Dame in the final game of the season. The 1943 Miami Redskins football team was an American football team that represented Miami University as an independent during the 1943 college football season. In its second and final season under head coach Stu Holcomb, Miami compiled a 7–2–1 record and outscored all opponents by a combined total of 293 to 91. The team lost to Western Michigan (6–0) and Arkansas A&M (35–0) and played Indiana to a 7–7 tie. Bob Russell was the honorary team captain. The 1943 Michigan Wolverines football team represented the University of Michigan in the 1943 Big Ten Conference football season. Fritz Crisler, in his sixth year as head coach, led the team to an 8–1 record and a tie with Purdue for the Western Conference championship. The team was ranked No. 3 in the final AP Poll behind Notre Dame and the Iowa Pre-Flight School. (It was ranked No. 2 by Litkenhous.) Michigan outscored its opponents 302 to 73 in nine games. Mount Pleasant, Michigan
Mount Pleasant is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. Located in Central Michigan, the city is the county seat of Isabella County. The population was 21,688 as of the 2020 United States census. It is surrounded by Union Township but is politically independent. Waldo Stadium is a stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It is primarily used for football, and has been the home of Western Michigan University Broncos football in rudimentary form since 1914, and as a complete stadium since 1939.
