Ernest Alley
Ernest Hayes "Herc" Alley (June 4, 1904 – August 24, 1971) was an American football player, track and field, track athlete, and coach. He served as head men's track coach at Vanderbilt University from 1949 to 1971. Alley was also the head football coach at Middle Tennessee State Teachers College—now known as Middle Tennessee State University—in 1939 and at Vanderbilt in 1943, compiling a career college football record of 6–6–1. A native of Tracy City, Tennessee, Alley played football as an End (American football), end at the University of Tennessee from 1927 to 1928. 1943 College Football Season
The 1943 college football season was the 75th season of intercollegiate football in the United States. Competition included schools from the Big Ten Conference, the Pacific Coast Conference (PCC), the Southeastern Conference (SEC), the Big Six Conference, the Southwestern Conference, and numerous smaller conferences and independent programs. The season was played during World War II. The teams ranked highest in the final Associated Press poll in December 1942 were: # 1943 Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team - The Fighting Irish compiled a 9–1 and were ranked No. 1 in the final AP poll.
