1942 World Professional Basketball Tournament
The 1942 World Professional Basketball Tournament was the 4th edition of the World Professional Basketball Tournament. It was held in Chicago, Illinois, during the days of 8–12 March 1942 and featured 14 teams. It was won by the Oshkosh All-Stars who defeated the Detroit Eagles 43–41 in the championship game. The Long Island Grumman Flyers came in third after beating the Harlem Globetrotters 43–41 in the third-place game. Ed Riska of the Oshkosh All-Stars was named the tournaments Most Valuable Player. Gene Englund led all scorers with 54 points while Riska came second with 50. Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons
The Detroit Pistons are an American professional basketball team based in Detroit. The Pistons compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league's Eastern Conference Central Division and play their home games at Little Caesars Arena, located in Midtown. Founded in Fort Wayne, Indiana as a semi-professional company basketball team called the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons in 1937, they would turn pro in 1941 as a member of the National Basketball League (NBL), where they won two NBL championships: in 1944 and 1945. The Pistons later joined the Basketball Association of America (BAA) in 1948. The NBL and BAA merged to become the NBA in 1949, and the Pistons became part of the merged league. Sonny Boswell
Wyatt "Sonny" Boswell (May 19, 1919 – October 19, 1964) was an early African American professional basketball player. He was born in Greenville, Mississippi and grew up in Toledo, Ohio, where he attended Scott High School. He played for the Harlem Globetrotters from 1939 to 1941 and again from 1943 to 1944. Boswell was known for taking long distance trick shots to entertain the fans. Morris Robert Becker (February 24, 1917 – January 9, 1996) was an American professional basketball player. He played college basketball for the Duquesne Dukes men's basketball, Duquesne Dukes. Buddy Jeannette
Harry Edward "Buddy" Jeannette (September 15, 1917 – March 11, 1998) was an American professional basketball player and coach. Jeannette was widely regarded as the premier backcourt player between 1938 and 1948. He was named to the First Team of the National Basketball League (NBL) four times, and won titles with the NBL's Sheboygan Red Skins in 1943 and Fort Wayne Pistons in 1944 and 1945. Jeannette also won a title with the American Basketball League's Baltimore Bullets in 1947. Theodore Reginald Strong, Jr. (January 2, 1914 – March 1, 1978), was an American Negro league baseball player who played from 1936 to 1942 and again from 1946 to 1951 for the Chicago American Giants, Indianapolis Athletics, Kansas City Monarchs, Indianapolis ABCs , and Indianapolis Clowns. Playing career Baseball Strong started his professional baseball career in 1937. He played 26 games that year, primarily for the Indianapolis Athletics, although he was later shifted to the Kansas City Monarchs and Chicago American Giants.
