1942 Newcastle-under-Lyme By-election
The 1942 Newcastle-under-Lyme by-election was a by-election held for the British House of Commons constituency of Newcastle-under-Lyme on 11 March 1942. The seat had become vacant when the Labour Member of Parliament (MP) Josiah Wedgwood was elevated to the peerage as Baron Wedgwood. He had held the seat since the 1906 general election. The Labour candidate, John Mack, was returned unopposed; during the Second World War the parties in the wartime coalition government had a pact not to contest by-elections in seats held. He represented the constituency until he retired from the House of Commons at the 1951 general election. An uncontested election is an election in which the number of candidates is the same as or fewer than the number of places available for election, so that all candidates are guaranteed to be elected. 1951 United Kingdom General Election
The 1951 United Kingdom general election was held twenty months after the 1950 general election, which the Labour Party had won with a slim majority of just five seats. The Labour government called a snap election for Thursday 25 October 1951 in the hope of increasing its parliamentary majority. However, despite winning the popular vote and achieving both the highest-ever total vote (until it was surpassed by the Conservative Party in 1992 and again in 2019) and highest percentage vote share, Labour won fewer seats than the Conservative Party. This was mainly due to the collapse of the Liberal vote, which enabled the Conservatives to win seats by default. The election marked the return of Winston Churchill as Prime Minister, and the beginning of Labour's thirteen-year spell in opposition. John Mack (UK Politician)
John David Mack, (26 June 1891 – 9 February 1957) was a Labour Party politician in the United Kingdom. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1942 to 1951. Born in Liverpool as Jacob David Mack, he grew up in Wrexham before becoming a life assurance agent in Liverpool. Mack became active in the National Amalgamated Union of Life Assurance Workers, then began working for the Labour Party as a lecturer. In 1928, he was elected to Liverpool City Council, serving until 1946. Mack unsuccessfully contested the Wallasey constituency at the 1929 general election and at the 1931 election. He did not contest the 1935 general election, but in 1942 he was elected unopposed at a by-election on 11th March in the Newcastle-under-Lyme constituency.
