1942 Amateur World Series
The 1942 Amateur World Series was the fifth edition of the Amateur World Series (AWS), an international men's amateur baseball tournament. The tournament was sanctioned by the International Baseball Federation (which titled it the Baseball World Cup as of the 1988 tournament). The tournament took place, for the fourth consecutive time, in Cuba. It was contested by four national teams playing twelve games each from September 26 through October 20 in Havana. Cuba won its third AWS title. There was a noticeably lower participation of teams as the effects of World War II started to be felt in the Pacific. The United States withdrew and forfeited their last four games. Therefore, the number of games contested, as opposed to slated, was actually 26. Andrés Fleitas
Andrés Fleitas lei'-tasz(November 8, 1916 – December 18, 2011) was a professional Cuban baseball catcher and first baseman. Listed at 5' 11", 175 lb., he batted and threw right handed. Born in Las Villas Province, Fleitas came from a baseball family, as his older brother, Ángel Fleitas, played briefly for the Washington Senators of the American League. Despite never reaching the Major Leagues as his brother did, Fleitas enjoyed a solid career in the Cuban Winter League and Minor League Baseball. Izzy León
Isidoro León Becerra (January 4, 1911 – July 25, 2002) was a Major League Baseball pitcher who played for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1945. The 34-year-old rookie was a native of Cruces, Cuba. León is one of many ballplayers who only appeared in the major leagues during World War II. He made his major league debut on June 21, 1945 in a home game against the Brooklyn Dodgers at Shibe Park. He was the starting and losing pitcher in a 9–2 defeat. Cy Buker was the winning pitcher. León's final big league appearance was on September 16. He was released by Philadelphia on February 26, 1946. Season and career totals include 14 games pitched, 4 starts, 0 complete games, a 0–4 record with 4 games finished, 23 earned runs allowed in 38 innings, and an ERA of 5.35.
