1941 Washington Huskies Football Team
The 1941 Washington Huskies football team was an American football team that represented the University of Washington during the 1941 college football season. In its 12th season under head coach Jimmy Phelan, the team compiled a 5–4 record, finished in second place in the Pacific Coast Conference, and outscored its opponents by a combined total of 120 to 94. After the season in mid-December, Phelan and his two assistants were fired. Assistant Ralph Welch was rehired as head coach for 1942. The Pacific Coast Conference (PCC) was a college athletic conference in the United States which existed from 1915 to 1959. Though the Pac-12 Conference claims the PCC's history as part of its own, with eight of the ten PCC members (including all four original PCC charter members) now in the Pac-12, the older league had a completely different charter and was disbanded in 1959 due to a major crisis and scandal. The Apple Cup is an American college football rivalry game between the University of Washington Huskies and Washington State University Cougars, the two largest universities in the state of Washington. Raymond William Frankowski (September 14, 1919 – November 27, 2001) was a Guard (American football), guard in the National Football League (NFL). Biography Frankowski was born on September 14, 1919 in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Career Frankowski was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the third round of the 1942 NFL Draft and played that season with the team. Following his time with the Packers, he would play three seasons with the Los Angeles Dons of the All-America Football Conference. The 1942 National Football League Draft was held on December 22, 1941, at the Palmer House Hotel in Chicago. Two members of the draft class have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Bill Dudley, the first overall selection by the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Mac Speedie, 135th overall selection by the Detroit Lions. Additionally, one member of the draft class became a Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame college basketball coach, Ralph Miller.
