1941 VFL Grand Final
The 1941 VFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the Melbourne Football Club and Essendon Football Club, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne on 27 September 1941. It was the 43rd annual Grand Final of the Victorian Football League, staged to determine the premiers for the 1940 VFL season. The match, attended by 79,687 spectators, was won by Melbourne by a margin of 29 points, marking that club's fifth premiership victory. By claiming their third successive premiership, Melbourne joined Carlton and Collingwood as the only clubs to achieve the feat. Melbourne's team was understrength as they had been depleted by the war. Syd Anderson, Harold Ball, Ron Barassi and Keith Truscott, who were members of the previous season's premiership, missed the Grand Final as they were serving their country and all died in World War II. James Patrick "Shane" McGrath (6 June 1919 – 1 November 1974) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne in the Victorian Football League during the 1940s. A fullback, McGrath was a member of Melbourne's 1941 premiership side before missing the following two seasons due to war service. Jack Mueller (footballer)
John Ernest Arthur Mueller (9 September 1915 – 14 June 2001) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of Francis Carl Mueller (1880-1945), and Eliza Mary "Cissie" Mueller (1887-1960), née O'Brien, John Ernest Arthur Mueller was born on 9 September 1915. He married Margaret Rose "Greta" Toohey on 14 April 1942. Football Mueller was famous for having only eight fingers, after losing two when he caught his hand in a machine at work. He was an inspirational player who contributed significantly to the success of the Melbourne sides in which he played during the 1930s, '40s and '50s. Gerry Daly (Australian Footballer)
Gordon Eric "Gerry" Daly (19 January 1915 – 6 August 1977) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Daly was born in Numurkah but recruited from the Sandhurst Football Club of Bendigo. He experienced considerable team success during his short VFL career, not playing in a loss until his 14th appearance. Norman Walter Smith (21 November 1915 – 29 July 1973) was an Australian rules football player and coach in the Victorian Football League (VFL). After more than 200 games as a player with and , Smith began a twenty-year coaching career, including a fifteen-year stint at Melbourne. Ray Wartman
Ray Wartman (29 January 1915 – 20 April 2008) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Melbourne in the VFL. Football Wartman played with the Whorouly Football Club in the Ovens & King Football League in the early 1930s and commenced with his VFA career with the Camberwell Football Club in late 1932 during the final series. Wartman was cleared to Whorouly in early 1933. Wartman then returned to Camberwell in 1934, before commencing with Melbourne in 1935, winning the Best First Year Player award. Stan Heal
Stanley "Pops" Heal (30 July 1920 – 15 December 2010) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL) as well as West Perth in the West Australian National Football League (WANFL) during the 1940s and early 1950s. Heal played his best football as a wingman but was also used on occasions as a rover. The Western Australian spent just one season at Melbourne, who had acquired his services while he was temporarily stationed in Victoria. Despite playing just eight games he was a member of Melbourne's 1941 premiership team. The following week he played in another premiership, back home in Western Australia with West Perth. He was also regular interstate representative for Western Australia, winning a Simpson Medal for his performance in a game against South Australia in 1949 and captaining his state at the 1950 Brisbane Carnival. Allan La Fontaine
Allan Faulkner La Fontaine (5 December 1910 – 14 August 1999) was an Australian rules footballer who played with and coached Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Private life La Fontaine was born at the country town of Eskdale, Victoria. While still a youngster his parents, Cyrelle and Beatrice, brought the family to Melbourne where they settled in the suburb of Footscray. He had three brothers, Claude, Lionel and Donald.
