1941 Auckland Rugby League Season
The 1941 Auckland Rugby League season was its 33rd. North Shore Albions won the Fox Memorial Shield for the 6th time since their formation in 1909. Their previous titles were in 1913 Auckland Rugby League season, 1913, 1914 Auckland Rugby League season, 1914, 1928 Auckland Rugby League season, 1928, 1932 Auckland Rugby League season, 1932, and 1933 Auckland Rugby League season, 1933. This was to be their last first grade championship title. They finished with a 13 win, 1 draw, 2 loss record for 27 competition points, just one competition point ahead of Manukau Magpies, Manukau. Both teams were well out in front in the title race with Richmond Rovers third 8 points behind Manukau. Manukau did however win the Roope Rooster knockout final when they defeated Ponsonby Ponies, Ponsonby United 28–10. Auckland Rugby League
The Auckland Rugby League (ARL) is the governing body for the sport of rugby league in the Auckland Region of New Zealand. It is responsible for rugby league in the region, including both club and school rugby league. It began in 1910 when the first season of club league in Auckland occurred. The first match was a practice game between Newton Rangers and Ponsonby United at Victoria Park which Ponsonby won 17 to 15. The first full club season was in 1910. The Auckland Rugby League was once recognised by England's Northern Rugby Football Union as New Zealand's governing body for the game of rugby league. In 2009, the ARL celebrated its centenary. Papakura Sea Eagles
The Papakura Sea Eagles are an Auckland rugby league club based in Papakura. The Sea Eagles currently compete in the Fox Memorial competition run by the Auckland Rugby League. History The Papakura Rugby League Club formed in 1931. On March 26 they had 60 players enroll to play. They applied to the Papakura Town Board for the use of the reserve at Papakura. This was granted as the entire club had switched over from Rugby Union meaning they had no competition for the field. The council said that if a representative rugby game was being played on the field then the league team could use Prince Edward Park (which later became their home ground and remains so to this day). Marist Saints
The Marist Saints is a rugby league club based in Mount Albert, New Zealand. They currently compete in the top grade in Auckland Rugby League, the Fox Memorial Premiership. History Founded in 1919, the Marist club first won the Fox Memorial in 1924. They originally played at the Auckland Domain before moving to their current home, in Murray Halberg Park. Their lower grade teams now also play matches at Margaret Griffen Park in Lynfield. First season and match In 1919 Marist entered teams in first grade and also in the second grade. The second grade side defaulted their first match and then withdrew from the competition. On May 3, 1919, Marist played in their first ever match. It was played at Victoria Park on the #2 field against Newton Rangers. James Clark ( 1913–1927) was a New Zealand rugby league footballer. A Second-row forward, Clark represented the Ponsonby United rugby league club and played for Auckland provincially. Ted Phelan
Edward John Phelan (1874 – 28 March 1961) was a New Zealand trade unionist, politician and rugby league administrator. Biography Early life and union career Phelan was born in Auckland in 1874 and attended Wellesley Street School. He left school aged 14 and attained a job as a tally boy in a sawmill north of Wairoa. He married Ellen McIlroy in 1896. They had one son and two daughters. In Wairoa Phelan made a name for himself in public affairs. He was elected a member of the local hospital board and was a prominent member of the local branch of the Timber Workers' Union. He later returned to Auckland and in 1907 became national secretary of the Timber Workers' Union. He held this post for a record 30 years. Joe Sayegh
Joseph Callil Sayegh (7 March 1884 – 29 March 1946) was a New Zealand politician and businessman. Early life and career Sayegh was of Assyrian origin, born in Lebanon 11 kilometres from Bethlehem on 7 March 1884. Sayegh's father Callil emigrated with his family from Lebanon to Sydney, Australia in 1888. The Sayegh family later moved to New Zealand in 1894 arriving in Wellington before finally settling in Auckland. Callil Sayegh set up business as owner operator of a restaurant which Joe was to take over on his father's retirement. Situated on Auckland's Queen Street, opposite to the Civic Theatre, Sayegh's establishment specialized in serving tea and confectionery. He later became the President of the Auckland Retail Confectioners' Association. He never married. Sir Ernest Hyam Davis (17 February 1872 – 16 September 1962) was a New Zealand businessman, and was Mayor of Auckland City from 1935 to 1941. He was also on other Auckland local bodies (Fire Board, Hospital Board, Drainage Board) and on various philanthropic and sporting organisations. He was Mayor of Newmarket (a small inner-Auckland borough) from 1909 to 1910. Early life Davis was born on 17 February 1872 in Nelson to brewer Moss Davis and Leah Davis (). He attended Bishop's School in Nelson, and Auckland Grammar. On 2 August 1899, he married Marion Mitchell, who had made a career as an opera singer with her debut at age 14. 1942 Auckland Rugby League Season
The 1942 Auckland Rugby League season was its 34th. The season was extremely hampered by World War II with so many men away at war. The Auckland Rugby League reduced the number of teams in the senior grade from 9 to 6, and there were few reserve grade matches and no senior B competition what so ever. Many clubs were forced to focus on their junior teams and schoolboy sides. The Fox Memorial Shield was won by Manukau for the second time in its history following its first title in 1936. They finished with a 13 win, 2 loss record, comfortably ahead of the amalgamated City- Otahuhu side in second place with a 10 win, 5 loss record. The City- Otahuhu side had won all 5 of their first round matches to win the Rukutai Shield. The Roope Rooster was won by Richmond Rovers who beat the amalgamated Marist- North Shore side 13-6 in the final. This was the 7th time Richmond had won the Roope Rooster trophy. 1940 Auckland Rugby League Season
The 1940 Auckland Rugby League season was its 32nd. Richmond Rovers won the Fox Memorial Shield for the 4th time after previously winning in 1934, 1935, and 1937. They finished the season with a 12 win, 1 draw, 3 loss record and were 3 points ahead of runner up North Shore Albions, with Mount Albert United in 3rd. Papakura struggled through much of the competition only managing 1 win. They, like many teams had lost playing members to the war effort and were unable to field a reserve grade side. Richmond Rovers also won the Roope Rooster knockout competition when they beat Ponsonby United 31-7 in the final. Richmond had made the final by defeating a surprise Papakura side who had beaten Otahuhu Rovers and Manukau on their way to the semi final. While Ponsonby had thrashed Mount Albert 41-13 in their semi final.
