1941 All-Big Ten Conference Football Team
The 1941 All-Big Ten Conference football team consists of American football players selected to the All-Big Ten Conference team for the 1941 Big Ten Conference football season. The organizations selecting All-Big Ten teams in 1941 were: the Associated Press (AP), selected by the conference coaches; the United Press (UP), chosen by experts from the conference region; and International News Service (INS), selected based on input from scouts and scribes from the conference region. Five players were selected on the first team by all three selectors: quarterback Billy Hillenbrand of Indiana; fullback Bob Westfall of Michigan; end Dave Schreiner of Wisconsin; and tackles Alf Bauman of Northwestern and Dick Wildung of Minnesota. Westfall was the only Big Ten player selected in the first round of the 1942 NFL Draft. Schreiner was killed in action during the Battle of Okinawa in June 1945. American Football
American football (referred to simply as football in the United States and Canada), also known as gridiron, is a team sport played by two teams of eleven players on a rectangular field with goalposts at each end. The offense, the team with possession of the oval-shaped football, attempts to advance down the field by running with the ball or passing it, while the defense, the team without possession of the ball, aims to stop the offense's advance and to take control of the ball for themselves. The offense must advance at least ten yards in four downs or plays; if they fail, they turn over the football to the defense, but if they succeed, they are given a new set of four downs to continue the drive. Bill Garnaas
Wilford Benjamin Garnaas (October 8, 1921 – May 9, 2002) was an American football player who played three seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League (NFL). He attended Marshall High School in Minneapolis, Minnesota and played college football at the University of Minnesota. He was an All-American in 1941. He was drafted by the Chicago Cardinals as an offensive back in the sixth round of the 1944 NFL Draft The 1944 National Football League Draft was held on April 19, 1944, at the Warwick Hotel in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. George Zorich
George Zorich (November 24, 1918 – October 14, 1967), was an American football guard. Zorich was born in 1918 at Wakefield, Michigan, located in the iron region of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. He attended Wakefield High School, graduating in 1937. He played college football at the guard position for Northwestern from 1939 to 1941. He graduated from Northwestern in February 1941 with a degree in history and education. He joined the Army in 1942 after the United States' entry into World War II. He served in the Coast Artillery and attained the rank of second lieutenant. He played professional football in the National Football League for the Chicago Bears from 1944 to 1945 and in the All-America Football Conference for the Miami Seahawks in 1946 and the Baltimore Colts in 1947. He appeared in 35 professional football games, 17 of them as a starter. Merv Pregulman
Mervin Pregulman (October 10, 1922 – November 30, 2012) was an All-American football player, businessman, and philanthropist. He played football as a tackle and center for the University of Michigan Wolverines from 1941 to 1943 and was selected as a first-team All-American in 1943. He was inducted into the United States Navy and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II, narrowly surviving a kamikaze attack on his ship in 1945. Pregulman was a first-round draft pick (seventh overall pick) of the Green Bay Packers in the 1944 NFL Draft. He played four years of professional football with the Packers (1946), Detroit Lions (1947–48), and New York Bulldogs (1949). He later became the president of Siskin Steel & Supply Co.in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Lin Houston
Lindell Lee Houston (January 11, 1921September 9, 1995) was an American football guard who played eight seasons in the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) and in the National Football League (NFL) with the Cleveland Browns. He was the older brother of Jim Houston. Houston played with the Browns from their inception in 1946 through the 1953 season. Cleveland reached the league championship game in each of Houston eight seasons with the club, winning four times between 1946 and 1949 in the AAFC and once in the NFL in 1950. Houston played for coach Paul Brown during every phase of his football career: at Massillon (Ohio) High School, Ohio State and the Browns. Al Wistert
Albert Alexander "Ox" Wistert (December 28, 1920 – March 5, 2016) was an American football offensive tackle, guard and defensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL) for the Philadelphia Eagles. He played his entire nine-year NFL career for the Eagles and became their team captain. He was named to play in the NFL's first Pro Bowl as an Eagle. During most of Wistert's career there were no football All-star games, although he was named to the league All-Pro team eight times. Wistert played college football at the University of Michigan. He is one of the three brothers—along with Whitey and Alvin— who were named All-American tackles at Michigan and later inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Robert Shaw (May 22, 1921 – April 10, 2011) was an American football end in the National Football League (NFL). Shaw lettered three times each in football, basketball and track at Fremont Ross High School. He was first-team All-Ohio in both football and basketball and won the shot put and discus in the state track and field meet. At Ohio State University, he lettered twice in football. Playing right end, on both offense and defense, Shaw was part of the Buckeyes' first NCAA National Championship team in 1942 and was named a first-team All American for that season. He also lettered in basketball and track, helping the Buckeyes to their first Western Conference track crown in 1942. Shaw was inducted into Ohio State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996. Chicago Tribune Silver Football
The Chicago Tribune Silver Football is awarded by the ''Chicago Tribune'' to the college football player determined to be the best player from the Big Ten Conference. The award has been presented annually since 1924, when Red Grange of Illinois was the award's first recipient. A vote of Big Ten head football coaches determines the winner of the Silver Football. Each coach submits a two-player ballot with a first and second choice, and coaches cannot vote for players on their own team. The first-place vote receives two points and the second-place vote receives one point. Coaches and media of the Big Ten also make annual selections for additional individual honors. Jack Graf
Jack Graf (April 19, 1919 – September 14, 2009) was a two-sport athlete at Ohio State University. In football he was named Big Ten MVP in 1941 and in basketball he served as team captain in 1942. In 1938 Graf enrolled at Ohio State, where his father Campbell "Honus" Graf had been a three-sport athlete and the 1914 football captain. After college Honus had been a graduate assistant on the 1915 team and played professional football with Peggy Parratt's Cleveland Indians football club. He later served on the Ohio State Athletic Council. Jack Graf joined the Ohio State football team as quarterback and served as a backup to All-American Don Scott for two years. In 1941, before Graf's senior year, Paul Brown replaced Francis Schmidt as an Ohio State head coach and Brown moved Graf to fullback.
