The 1939 Taça de Portugal Final was the final match of the 1938–39 Taça de Portugal, the 1st season of the Taça de Portugal, the premier Portuguese football cup competition organized by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF). The match was played on 25 June 1939 at the Campo das Salésias in Lisbon, and opposed two Primeira Liga sides: Académica and Benfica. Académica defeated Benfica 4–3 to claim the first Taça de Portugal. The 1938–39 Taça de Portugal was the first season of the Taça de Portugal (English: ''Portuguese Cup''), the premier Portuguese football knockout competition, organized by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF). The final was played on 26 June 1939 between Académica de Coimbra and Sport Lisboa e Benfica. The Taça de Portugal replaced the previous knockout competition, the Campeonato de Portugal (Championship of Portugal), which defined the Portuguese champion. António Martins (footballer)
António Rodrigues Martins (27 July 1913 – deceased) was a Portuguese footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Career Born in Lisbon, Martins arrived at Sporting CP in 1934, as a 21-year-old, spending the first two seasons in the reserve squad. With Azevedo as undisputed starter, and four league matches in two seasons, he left the ''Lions'' in 1938, to join Benfica. In his first season, he beat Amaro for the keeper position, debuting on 2 October 1938 in a loss against his former team. Over the course of nine seasons, he added more than 140 appearances, winning three league titles, until he lost his place to Rosa in 1946, after representing the club on 265 matches. He received one cap, in a 3–0 win against Switzerland on 1 January 1942. Lippo Hertzka ( hu, Hertzka Lipót, 19 November 1904 – 14 March 1951) was a Hungarian football player and manager of Jewish descent. He played for Essener Turnerbund, MTK Budapest and Real Sociedad. Alfredo Valadas Mendes (16 February 1912 – 1994) was a Portuguese footballer who played as outside forward. Over the course of 10 seasons, he amassed Primeira Liga totals of 136 games and eighty six goals, all at Benfica, winning nine major titles. Club career Born in Minas de S. Guilherme Espírito Santo
Guilherme Santa Graça do Espírito Santo (30 October 1919 – 25 November 2012), best known as Espírito Santo, was a Portuguese footballer and athlete. Over the course of 12 seasons he amassed Primeira Liga totals of 117 games and 79 goals, spending all of his career at Benfica, winning seven major titles. Francisco Alves Albino (2 November 1912 – 25 February 1993), best known as Albino, was a Portuguese footballer who played as a midfielder. Francisco "Xico" Ferreira (23 August 1919 – 14 February 1986) was a Portuguese footballer who played as a midfielder. Álvaro Gaspar Pinto (27 February 1912 – 27 April 1969), known as Gaspar Pinto, was a Portuguese footballer who played as a defender. Gustavo Antunes Teixeira (born 26 December 1908 – 1 January 1987) was a Portuguese footballer who played as defender. Over the course of 4 seasons, he amassed Primeira Liga totals of 65 games, spending most of his career at Benfica, winning four major titles.
