1938 VFL Grand Final
The 1938 VFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the Carlton Football Club and Collingwood Football Club, held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne on 24 September 1938. It was the 40th annual Grand Final of the Victorian Football League, staged to determine the premiers for the 1938 VFL season. The match was won by Carlton by a margin of 15 points, marking that club's sixth premiership victory and first since winning the 1915 VFL Grand Final. This Grand Final was attended by 96,486 spectators, setting a new record as the largest crowd to have witnessed a premiership decider in VFL Grand Final history, and breaking the previous year's record by eight thousand. Jim Francis
James Arthur Francis (12 December 1910 – 16 November 2004) was an Australian rules footballer and coach in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of Henry Walter Francis (1883–1964) and Sarah Victoria Francis, nee Jackson (1884–1929), James Arthur Francis was born in Hawthorn on 12 December 1910. His brothers John and Syd also played VFL football, both for Hawthorn. In 1937, James Francis married Shirley Louise King at St. Stephens Church of England in Richmond. Football Hawthorn After playing 61 games for Hawthorn, Francis left the Hawks in controversial circumstances, due to a disagreement with the club and his family's sports store. Jack Hale (Australian Footballer)
John Lachlan Hale (2 January 1913 – 25 June 2001) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Carlton in the VFL during the 1930s before becoming a coach. He married Jean Margaret Reynolds in 1940 and they stayed married until his death. Playing career Hale played in many positions during his career but was most notably a rover. He represented Victoria at the 1937 Perth Carnival as first rover, demoting the legendary Dick Reynolds to second rover. The following year he was a premiership player with Carlton in 1938. Unusually for his era, he sometimes took set shots with place kicks – albeit with limited success, his first place-kicked goal not coming until 1940. Brighton John Diggins (born Bryton John Diggins, 26 December 1906 – 14 July 1971) was an Australian rules footballer in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) and Victorian Football League (VFL). Rod McLean
Roderick Findlay McLean (22 October 1915 – 14 September 1979) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Carlton in the VFL. He is the father of Richmond and Carlton footballer Ricky McLean. A ruckman, McLean was a premiership player with Carlton in 1938 and 1945. Late in the 1942 season he was found guilty of disputing the decisions of a field umpire, abusive language and unseemly conduct during a game which resulted in a 16 games suspension. McLean served in the Australian Army for three years during World War II. Henry Francis "Soapy" Vallence (4 June 1905 – 25 July 1991) was a champion Australian rules footballer in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and the Victorian Football Association (VFA). John Everett Wrout (8 October 1911 – 16 June 1981) was an Australian rules footballer who played in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Paul Schmidt (footballer)
Paul Bernard Schmidt (23 April 1917 – 17 June 1961) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Carlton in the VFL. Schmidt was a half forward, he topped Carlton goalkicking every season from 1940 to 1942. His best season tally came in 1941 when he managed 77 goals, including 11 in Carlton's Round 16 game against St Kilda. He was a premiership player in 1938 and missed the 1943 season due to military commitments.
